AP UNITED STATES HISTORY
SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT 2011

Hello and welcome to the exciting world that is Advanced Placement United States History. You are now a member of an elite group: students who dare to take on an exceptionally challenging course. The risks are great, but then so are the potential gains. We will take on this challenge together and when you are done, you will be justifiably proud of yourself. This course is a one-year class designed to allow the student a head start on college level work, improve writing skills, sharpen problem solving techniques, and develop study habits necessary for rigorous course work. This course is equivalent to a one semester introductory (freshman) level college U.S. history.
This summer’s assignment comes as a result of the time constraints placed on us all in covering the immense content in APUSH over nine months. To allow for more an in depth study of the various periods of American History, it is necessary to cover the first 350 years of history during the summer, individually, with some exceptionally readable non-fiction histories. You will be tested over the material covered in American Colonies when you return to school in August.
The assigned reading is: • Taylor, Alan, " American Colonies: The Settling of North America", Part I Encounters: CH 1-5 pp. 3-113, Part II Colonies: CH 6-12, pp. 117-272, and Part III Empires: CH 13 - 19 pp. 275 – 480.

THE “AMERICAN COLONIES” BOOK SHOULD BE PICKED UP FROM MY CLASSROOM (#20) BY WEDNESDAY, MAY 19TH. THE COST OF THE BOOK WILL BE BILLED TO YOU.
Read the book carefully. As you read, follow the instructions for the book analysis on pages 3-7 of this document.

Another surprise is that David McCullough, best known for Rushmore-size biographies of underrated presidents, wrestles America's founding year into a taut 294 pages of text, describing the trying months that followed the heroics at Lexington, Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill. The result is a lucid and lively work that will engage both Revolutionary War bores and general readers who have avoided the subject since their school days.…

Much of what is taught in History classes around the world is rarely about how America really came to be what it is today. I cannot remember a lot of what I read about the start of our country but I do know that I was taught that everything started with Christopher Columbus. After reading a good sum of written materials I feel that I am better informed. While the so-called discovery of Columbus did pave the way for many changes there is more to it than meets the eye.…

College Application American colonies had been loyal to the superior British Empire since they founded America. When England abandoned the Americas to focus on their own economy and welfare, they left the colonies to develop on their own. This period of time, called salutary neglect, greatly influenced the legislative assemblies, commerce, and religion in the colonies before 1750. Blankly, I stared at my computer screen. I read and reread the topic sentence of the introduction to my AP United States History essay for five minutes. Nothing registered. I couldnt concentrate. Its 1132 at night. And all I have is one lousy paragraph to an entire thematic essay due by 1112 tomorrow morning. So theres really nothing else to show you. Sorry if that disappoints you. Ill be done by two oclock in the morning if you wish to see the rest of the essay.…

Incomprehensible facts of history get overlooked to fit the script people want to believe. So, history by its nature is a subject based on interpretation. As man and time changes, so do stories and tales that include history. Therefore it is necessary for students to make and justify decisions about the relative authenticity of historical texts. History can be compared to the situation in class where the teacher whispers a sentence into a student 's ear, and then the student is to repeat the sentence to the next student and so on until the last student hears it. It is human to interpret what we hear or learn according to our opinions. In this example, each student can represent a decade of time and the sentence can represent history. In the settlement of the 13 colonies, there are different interpretations of the settlers and the natives. "Victors write history" and therefore the defeated ones have no choice but to rely on oral history. The difference between both articles "The planting of the colonies" and "The Early Settlers" written by Nevins & Commager and Zinn clearly show that either of them is biased or both of them are. Nevins & Commager talk more about superiority of the settlers and inferiority of natives whereas Zinn talks more about life and culture of the Natives and also that they were superior to the settlers in relations and humanity. In showing inferiority to the natives, Nevins & Commager state "…. filled with wild beasts, and peopled by warlike, cruel, and treacherous people still in the Stone Age of culture" (2). Moreover, Nevins & Commager also state "…. creeping on all fours from hills, like bears, with their bows in their mouths" (2). In contrast to this, Zinn writes "A French Jesuit priest….wrote: "No poorhouses are needed among them, because they are neither mendicants nor paupers…. Their kindness, humanity and courtesy not only makes them liberal with what they have, but causes them to possess hardly anything except in common" (2). Talking…
