After reviewing these documents it is clear that the Roman’s and Han’s attitudes towards technology differed from person to person. For the most part, Romans disapproved of new tools that were being invented, unimpressed by hammers and tongs, they thought tools were useless and made people indolent. On the other hand, most Hans thought technology was a wonderful thing, making peoples lives easier and completing tasks faster. To better understand the Roman and Han impression on technology, one must understand their opinions and situations regarding the use of new tools and other technological advances. The Romans challenged the efficiency of basic tools that were invented. In document one, Cicero, an upper-class Roman political leader, states that “all craftsmen spend their time in vulgar occupations; no workshop can have anything enlightening about it.” What Cicero mean by this is that the people who make tools lack sophistication and that workshops can not, in any way, be useful. In document seven, Seneca, an upper-class Roman Philosopher and adviser to Empor Nero, believed that tools were “invented by someone with a mind that was nimble and sharp, but not great or elevated.” He believed tools were a clever, but there were other things that are way more important. The Han on the other hand, see concurred with technology and believed it was a great benefit to society. In document 3, Huan Tan said then the pestle and the mortar “increase[ed] efficiency times” once it was improved. Once the power and animals and the power of water was added, “the benefit was increased a hundredfold.” In History of the Early Han Dynasty, according to Document 4, Tu Shih invented a water-powered-blowing-engine because he “wished to save [peoples’] labor.” It was widely spread and used. The Roman weren’t too happy with technology and didn’t care much for tools. The Han saw technology as a wonderful thing to help them with everyday life.

The Han and Roman Empires technology were both self glorifying. In Document 6, Plutarch who is a Roman high official describes Gaius Gracchus in the 1st century who was a political leader. He wanted to build roads, utility, aqueducts, and bridges. Gracchus might have gotten his ideas from Greek architecture and the ideas inspired him to make a city similar to Greek/Hellenistic plans. In Document 8, written by Frontius who was a Roman General, governor of Britain, and water commissioner in Rome during the first century C.E. wrote that he was fascinated by the famous works of architecture and technology replicated from the Greeks. Document 4 is from a textbook which was government sponsored planned irrigation system for the peasants in China. Without the pus of political authority, the society would never advance technologically because of the opposition of the nobles and the peasant's weaknesses. An additional document that can help us with the situation is a political speech where the emperor back-fires the nobles who were against technology.…

Around times ranging from the first century B.C.E all the way to the first century C.E. two large cultures with slightly differing opinions pertaining to technology were those of Han China and Rome. While Rome, a civilization set upon expansion and conquest; saw little need for adaptive technology lest it aided in the plundering lifestyle Rome’s economy was based upon, Han China was much more tolerant towards advancements in technology even as they preferred a more traditional lifestyle. The two main branches of technology presented through the documents include: Technology introduced by governing bodies/officials, and technology innovated by the common consumer.…

Between 1000BCE and 600CE the technological achievements of the Han and Roman Empires greatly excelled creating an outlook of the concepts we have today. Han China as well as Rome both had great construction, where new roads were being built and advanced in the production of newly arrived iron used for tools and weaponry; however, while Han China used iron to open more land clearing the forest as well as to conquer new territories, Rome used their less impressively made iron tools and weapons to expand the empire. Also, although both empires successfully built roads, Rome’s focus leaned toward luxury while the Hans did not take their surroundings for granted therefore building what was simply needed.…

From the second century B.C.E to 200 C.E, technology has proved an important role in the modernization and advancement of empires such as the Han and Roman. The Han’s attitude towards technology was that of respect and appreciation, which eventually lead to the advancement of their great empire. The Romans, however, although dependent on technology for resources like water and everyday usages like roads, had a negative and degrading attitude towards technology. The different attitudes can be explained by the different empires and parts of society that each of the authors of the documents were a part of. The Han and Roman attitudes had a stark contrast in belief, along with the different in political and government leaders with the upper-class. Another document that would have been helpful in the analysis of the differing attitudes would be an excerpt from a lower-class worker. All of the documents provided were from either the upper-class or a political or government leader who all had their own beliefs on what technology is like without being in direct contact with tools like a worker would have been.…

Every document has its own opinions on the way they appreciate technology some support which is making then look good, while some think it’s for low class people and not for government. Documents 1, 2, 3, and 4 all have a positive attitude towards technology and that it should be useful to and help the common people. In document 1, it talks about preventing flood prevention, selecting a person as chief hydraulic engineer, ordering inspections of the waterways, and supplying enough workers to those who are to carry out the repair work. This shows that the Han cared about the common people. In document 2, it talks about the tools and how when they were produced by the families they were well made, but when they were produced by the state using convict labor, they were more crude and not very functional, showing that the Han cared about how well the tools are working. In document 3, it…

When comparing attitudes towards technology in Han China and Ancient Rome during the Classical period, there were both similarities and differences. One way in which they were similar was that both their attitudes towards technology were that it was a necessary part of a civilization, because it helps to regulate an empire. One way in which they were different was that while Han believed that technology was a gift from higher powers, Rome believed that technology was useful but not to it’s full potential or fit for people of this community. Documents 1, 2, 5, and 7 all hold the attitude that technology in these civilizations was completely necessary. Documents 3 and 4 hold the attitude that technology is a gift and relates to their religion. Documents 6 and 8 hold the attitude that technology is an artistic and inventive process.…

Again, Han had an approving approach to technology in contrast to the rather negative views of the Romans. In History of the Early Han Dynasty, Tu Shih a governor of Nanyang, was described as a very supportive and popular person among the common people. Tu Shih had invented a water-powered blowing engine for the casting of iron agricultural implements that allowed people to enjoy great benefit for little labor. The book also says that the invention was widely adopted and used. This book doesn’t say much about technology but it shows that it was embraced by the common people and had beneficial values. Unlike Han, the Roman political leader Cicero takes a very degrading view of technology. He specifically bashes on the craftworkers, saying that the jobs hired workers took on are vulgar and unbecoming to a gentleman. According to him, all craftsmen spend their time in vulgar occupations and no workshop would have enlightening about it. This proves that Cicero believed there was nothing that men who made technology should be proud of, which contrasted greatly with Han…

There is no doubt that things that benefit people and gift are considered positive. A Han government official (Document 1) wrote to local officials in order to advise them on how to use their technology to prevent floods, showing his interests in maintaining the empire so that it doesn't fall. Not only that, Han Guan, another government official (Document 2) goes against the way the government is monopolizing the making of technology and that technology should be made by the people, since government made technologies are brittle and costing the government more money as not much salt is being produced. It is very interesting that an official would speak against the government, but it may be due to the fact that the scarcity of salt is costing this official money. Both officials may also be looking to maintain their positions or get higher ones once the emperor sees how well they are looking after the empire, which can only be maintained with the help of technology. Others in Han society consider technology as a gift from enlightened leaders. Huan Tan, an upper-class philosopher (document 3) mentions that Fuxi invented some technology which was efficient and beneficial to society. Fuxi, is said to be a wise enlightened emperor which means that since Fuxi made it, it is no doubt a great gift. There is also some government sponsored history (Document 4) which characterizes Tu Shih as a just and commoner loving man who developed technology in order lift some of the burden of labor off the people. Technology was Tu Shih's gift to the people and Tu Shih, was considered a Fuxi. Therefore this government sponsored historian also considers technology a gift.…

On the other hand, few documents show points of view seeing technology in a negative light. Document 2 shows a govt. official describing the bad quality of technology because of lack of workers and quality labor. He also states that the lack of quality technology causes an increase in the iron and salt prices, resulting in lack of seasoning for the peasants’ food and lack of strong tools for farming. Documents 5 and 7 show two Roman upper classman opposed to technology because they believe inventors and craftsment lack wisdom and enlightenment.…
