1. Unfree labor systems were widely used for agricultural production from 1450 to1750. Analyze the major similarities and differences between two of the following systems:
Caribbean slavery
West African slavery
Russian serfdom
Answer:
When you look at the Caribbean and Slavery and Russian serfdom you would probably think serfdom doesn’t seem like slavery but in a way it was. These two labor systems have their differences but they also have similarities. Slavery became popular in Caribbean and Russia; these too have similarities in how they treated their slaves/serfdom.
In the Caribbean the plantations relied heavily on slaves to do the work in the fields. There were high death rates in the Caribbean slavery due to overwork, working conditions, and disease. The slaves would usually work in the fields planting, maintaining, and harvesting the crops. They would also do all the weeding.
In Russia they didn’t have slaves they had serfdoms. Russian economy was usually based on their serfdom. Serfdoms were treated awful, the landowners could treat the serfs however the wanted and most of the time it was not very nicely. Serfs could be traded, but luckily not killed; almost all of Russian peasants were serfs. Slavery in Russia was a major thing, but the name changed from slaves to serfs.
What they have in common is both of them would punish their slaves in same way, usually they were beaten. The times they would usually get in trouble were when they were disobeying. In both the slaves/serfs had to work for long periods of time in bad working conditions. The slaves got no respect and were treated as objects instead of people; these slaves had no rights, and no freedom.
As you can see both were not treated with respect or as human beings. Slaves and serfs did not have it
