Thirty years ago, Apo Island faced a catastrophic decline in the seafood. This decline was linked to rapid population growth combined with destructive fishing methods such as dynamite or cyanide fishing, small gill nets, deep-sea trawling, and muroami. Scientists from a nearby island collaborated with Apo locals to devise a plan to reestablish the fish supply. With the implementation of the suggested reserves, fish populations excelled in a short period of time. In addition to the reserve plan, a low-impact fishing methods were implemented. This includes fishing methods such as hand-held lines, bamboo traps, large mesh nets, spearfishing. The direct effect of this was the increase in available fish supply. This allows locals to gather fish much easier with this increase in supply. Now that they don’t have to spend as much time getting fish, they have more time to devote to building the economy in their area. The much improved area and new infrastructure brings additional people into the area. Tourists come to visit the area and produce income from the area by means of diving and touring as well their time and money spent in hotels and restaurants. …show more content…

In a graph, which axis represents the independent variable? The dependent variable?
In a graph, the X axis represents the independent variable. The X axis is horizontal. These variables are also called the explanatory variables in hopes they will explain differences in the dependent variable. The Y axis represents the dependent variable, also known as a response variable. The Y axis is vertical. This variable is affected by the independent
variables.
9. Why do some experts regard water as the most critical natural resource for the twenty-first century?
Water is needed for survival. Not only does the human body need water to sustain life, but so do other animals and species. Water is also needed for agriculture and nature as a whole to continue to prosper. Many people believe water is a great source of energy as well. Not only is water the most critical natural resource, but clean, non-toxic water is necessary for sustainment of life. Predictions indicate by 2025 3/4ths of the world will not have access to sanitary water. Water resources are finite, the population growth and how they mistreat water is ongoing.
12. What is the link between poverty and environmental quality?
The link between poverty and environmental quality is not complex. The main focus of poverty stricken people is survival by whatever means necessary. This means when deciding to make choices to survive that are not favorable for the environment, they choose the side o survival. It is difficult for them to see past the immediate survival to consider the long term effects on the environment.
13. Define sustainability and sustainable development.
Sustainability refers to the search for ecological stability and human progress for the long term. This is an attempt to encourage resiliency and adaptability in both ecological systems and human institutions. Sustainable development is the development of our environment in which current needs are met without compromising future generations from meeting their sustainable needs.
Critical Thinking 1. The example of Apo Island marine sanctuary clearly is scientifically sound. The study of the available fish and the solution of implementing reserves were based on scientific findings. This positive change shows the effects that science can have on our environment. As the fishing supply began to increase the area became economically sustainable. Not only were they able to sustain the family incomes as fish were caught in closer proximity to home. The fishing opportunities and diving into coral reefs offered tourism opportunities which also provided economic sustainability for the area. The changes in Apo Island removed the unhealthy fishing choices of dynamite or cyanide fishing, small gill nets, deep-sea trawling, and muroami. This provided an environment that was more socially acceptable. If I were studying this situation, I would use the items mentioned above to support this conclusion.
