During the Apollo 13 mission, the crew was faced with odds that were not in their favor. They were faced with many uncertainties that would possibly be fatal if they went wrong. It all started when a crew member stirred the o2 tanks, and the tanks burst. With this predicament, they could not possibly land on the moon. Mission Control or "Houston" had to come up with a flawless plan to get the U.S spacemen back to the Earth.…

The actual launch of the Apollo 13 was on April 11, 1970. Two days into the mission it looked like the smoothest flight that the Apollo program had ever seen. "The spacecraft is in real good shape as far as we are concerned. We're bored to tears down here." said Joe Kerwin of mission control (3). At 55 hours the crew held a TV broadcast for 49 minutes where they showed off their living conditions and how they worked in weightless situations. Nine minutes after the broadcast mission control instructed that Odyssey to give their oxygen tanks a stir and moments later oxygen tank No.2 in the service module exploded, due to an exposed fan wire. The eruption then damaged oxygen tank No.1, causing them to start to lose oxygen rapidly. The cover of…
America has always taken great pride in its successes and accomplishments in science and technology; its claim of superiority is indisputable and evident with the continuous scientific discoveries and constant advancement of electronic gadgets. However, according to Burton Diche, during the 1950s and 1960s, "the American space program had absorbed a series of high-profile embarrassments as the Soviet Union, with which the U.S. was competing in a so-called Space Race, seemed to remain one step ahead."1 Yet, instead of accepting defeats, America demonstrated its power to the Soviets and the world by the extraordinary triumph of the first moon landing in 1969. In order to fully appreciate the significance of the lunar landing of Apollo 11, one must review the history of the early U. S. space program, from its inception to the successful completion of the Apollo mission.…
Deborah Ellis novel Parvana explores how human can survive in near to impossible situations and misfortune, however Parvana not only survives but thrives. However things take a turn for the worst when they thought nothing else could happen, and her father is taken away by the Taliban so she is forced to dress up as a boy and provide an income for the family.…
Amidst the shortcoming of the Cold War, the goal of the 1960’s was “to go above and beyond” in space exploration by successfully landing a man on the moon, which would serve as a gambit to conceivably lead the United States to victory. Before astronauts ventured beyond the earth, scientists had to assess the space environment and the hazards of human exploration. Soon after President John F. Kennedy assumed office in January of 1961, the space race was undoubtedly underway, and the United State’s primary focus was landing a man on the moon--hence, the Apollo Program. These Apollo Missions are significant in that America received technical credibility and hasted the end of the Cold War in our favor. Also, Carole Stott, a long-time astronomer…
The Challenger Space Shuttle, one of the most anticipated shuttle launches, was the first mission to ever include a teacher astronaut. Christa McAuliffe, the teacher that was going on the shuttle along with six others, was supposed to broadcast lessons around the country from space. Sadly, all the excitement and joy came to an end shortly after the launch. The mission marked the first time American astronauts lost their lives. One of the worst disasters of manned spaceflight is the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion(Challenger, 2008), which was caused by a combination of natural and man-made issues, and had a permanent effect on safety and regulations of manned spaceflight.…
Space exploration was magical for my generation. If you asked any child, especially boys, what they wanted to be when they grew up, many would proudly announce “An astronaut!”. That does not seem to be the case with the youth of today as our space program is not the glory we once knew. For the majority of Americans, the Challenger Disaster was just that, a disaster. After watching the documentaries and listening to the opinions expressed by both experts and those actually in charge of the lethal decisions in the launch, my views have changed. It is hard to imagine money and appearance were the driving motives to launch a shuttle with known complications. The fact the space program…
Apollo 13 was overall a very accurate movie, scientifically and factually. Of course there were things changed in order to advance the story and make the movie more interesting, but most of these things were very small. Apollo 13 was an Apollo mission that came after the first landing on the moon. The problem was that since the United States had already beaten Russia to the moon people weren’t sure why they needed to go back, so there were less resources and money going into this mission.…
Following this, many things shifted in the United States. Science and Math became an important part of education in schools, and new technology and machines never available to the public were released. Developments made during Apollo 11 and the space race were making it possible to see the Earth and the solar system differently (Taylor). With everything going on, many kids growing up during this time became enthusiastic about working for NASA when they were old enough as…
The Space Race 1960’s, It was an important part of the Cold War.The Soviet Union did whatever it took to tell the U.S. that they were better. They decided to become the first people to step on the moon. The U.S. found out and went to work on it right away, but the movie studios? Yep, the U.S. was trying to claim that they were the first ones on the moon. The Soviet Union on the other hand was actually trying, but failed. They broadcasted the “moon landings” all across the world, which made the Soviet Union very unhappy. But most people believe that this is untrue, but Buzz Aldrin, an astronaut on the Apollo 11 space shuttle, claimed that he faked the whole mission in a studio, than there is also some strange things found in the photos and videos taken of the moon, and…
The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient Mesopotamian epic about a king who is two thirds god and one third man. The king does not meet his expectations of leadership as he is selfish and often angers the Gods. When his companion Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh goes off on a quest to attain immortality. He fails in this quest and eventually dies, but through his travel he came to terms with his own mortality and his greatness lived on. While the main characters are men, women have small but important roles in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The women in this epic reveal that ancient Mesopotamians valued womenÕs roles as child bearers and transmitters of civilization. While the Epic of Gilgamesh reveals much about Mesopotamian religion, the goddesses described also reveal, in some ways, how the Mesopotamian viewed and valued women. Ishtar is the goddess of both love and war, this shows that women have the power to be both wonderful and productive or destructive and horrible. A womanÕs most important role in life is to bear children and a woman who cannot bear children is seen as destructive to the population. Only a woman has the capacity to create life and that makes her important and valuable. The one who created the earth, according to the Epic of Gilgamesh, was a goddess, a woman. The wife of the sun is the dawn, giving birth to a new day. Because of…
The Space Race was huge to society during his youth, and I thought it was awesome to hear about. It was really interesting to me that with little technology, countries were able to send men into space successfully. My grandpa was a teenager at this time so he couldn’t remember everything that happened, but he told me the important parts. When it came to the space race he told me, “when the Russians were first into space, it was a pretty big deal. Nobody in America liked them, so we had to do better. So we decided to go send our own guys into space to see if we could be better than the Russians.” He also told me that the Space Race was a massive rivalry that stood between the United States and the then- Soviet Union which lasted for many years. During recent times, NASA sent a space shuttle, Atlantis, containing people in 2010. The Atlantis space shuttle is the last shuttle that NASA’s program is going to send into space. Over the years, space travel has become more and more advanced. But NASA has went to more of a satellite-base program, which shows why they are going to stop sending humans into…
During the launch, I saw the Earth from very high up as I launched into space (though the fire emitted by the rocket blocked most of the view). We reached very intense speeds as we left the Earth’s atmosphere. We used a new rocket from SpaceX called the Dragon. This rocket will also be taking us back to earth as it is capable of making a launch and return trip.…
