Apparition At Knock
Intro
Apparitions are remarkable, unexpected appearances of someone, most commonly Mary. This report presents information on the apparitions of Rue du Bac in Paris, Knock in Ireland, and La Salette in France. These apparitions have taken place within the past 200 years.

Para 1- Rue du Bac, Paris
On 18 July, 1830, Mary appeared to Catherine Labouré. Twenty-four year old Catherine was a novice sister who saw Mary late at night in a chapel in the convent Rue du Bac, Paris. She was escorted to the chapel by someone she later found out to be her guardian angel. She then saw Mary descend down the altar steps and sit on the spiritual director's chair. Mary told Catherine that she had a mission for her and warned her of bad times that were to come.

The two apparitions took place in the same evening and only lasted three hours. On Thursday 21, 1879, two women from Knock, Mary McLoughlin and Mary Beirne were walking home in the rain when they passed by the local church. Against the wall stood the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, St John the Evangelist and an altar with a lamb and a cross on it. There were several angels flying around the altar. The two women called others to the church and they too saw the apparition. They described what they saw as a beautiful woman, clothed in white garments, wearing a crown and her hands were raised in prayer. Other villagers that weren't involved in the apparition reported seeing a bright, white light illuminating the church. A series of cures happened after this apparition. Ten days after, a young, deaf girl was given the gift of hearing. By the end of 1880, 300 miracles and cures had been recorded in the diary of the parish priest. The Knock Apparition is different to other apparitions for a number of reasons. One reason is that usually only Mary appears. Another reason is the lack of verbal message. Usually Mary comes with a warning or mission. Another factor that makes this apparition different is the number of people that experienced the apparition, usually no more than five people experience one. There were thirteen people involved in this apparition. The final difference is the duration of the apparition. Apparitions usually happen several times, but this one happened once for only two hours. These differences have made people doubt that the apparition in Knock ever took

Believed to be standing next to Mary is Archangel Gabriel who delivers the message to Mary that she would bear the child of god. While it is believed to be him, it’s peculiar because the archangel is represented as a woman who in fact looks very similar to Mary with long wavy red hair flowing down with a widow’s peak. The archangel is shown looking at Mary while also pointing to her and holding a golden staff. Painted gold in Latin are the words “The lord is with you.” “I am the maid of the lord” is also etched into Mary’s cloak. They are both shown standing inside a house in the countryside with the door open.…

After gathering roses, even while it was winter and not a suitable environment for roses, he brought them to the Bishop. She often compares herself to people in the Bible. When she was younger she had trouble with spiritual accounts. For this she brings up 2 Corinthian 12. 9. This scripture tells that God's grace is enough for her. Then later she brings up Job 1. 15 that says “And I only am escaped alone to tell the News(221).” This scripture is significant to Mary because she feels as though she was alive because she was chosen to tell of the events that occurred during King Philip's War.…

A miracle is often defined as an extraordinary event which cannot be explained either by natural or scientific laws. However, this definition of miracles often varies person to person. R.H. Holland defines miracles as a “remarkable and beneficial coincidence that is interpreted in a religious fashion,” whereas David Hume, writing during the Enlightenment period as an empiricist claimed that miracles are both improbable and irrational. In his book, Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume defined miracles as a violation of the laws of nature. Although Hume may say that miracles are the least likely of events, that does not lead on to say that they do not occur at all; it is possible to say that they do occur but it is not very likely. Also, it is difficult to explain these extraordinary events, and so a miracle is a good way of explaining these things. This essay will discuss Hume’s claim, and will come to the conclusion that miracles are not the least likely of events.…
