The way people act on the outside and who they really are on the inside may be two totally different things. Some people might pretend to be something they truly aren’t. that is what happened in ‘’Macbeth’’ written by Shakespeare to Macbeth, Banquo and Lady Macbeth.
Banquo holds back true feelings as he is an honourable man and does not want to offend the people around him. In the presence of the witches, Banquo tries to warn Macbeth about them to be cautious in his actions but not directly ‘’ to betray’s In deepest consequence’’. He feels that Macbeth has something to do with the murder but never says anything.
Just like Banquo, Macbeth’s appearance is different from his true self. He appears to be strong and wise when truly he is weak. He wants to appear strong and noble and in the end, he greedily kills people to get what he wants just like he did with Banquo and King Duncan. He seems truly weak when he is with Lady Macbeth as she questions if he is a ‘’man’’ and calls him a ‘’coward’’. King Duncan calls Macbeth ‘’valiant cousin’’ when in reality, Macbeth is planning to murder him.
Just like her husband, Lady Macbeth also does not show her true self to others. She pretends to be a potent woman such as when she pretended to faint in front of the Noblemen ‘’Help me hence, ho’’. King Duncan calls her an ‘’honour’d hostess’’ and gives her a diamond rind when in reality she is planning the murder. She appears strong and heartless when she would ‘’[pluck] the nipple from his boneless gums’’ however, she is not strong at all, her insides were tearing apart at the seams
Banquo, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth all paint a picture of their personalities on the outside but as proven, they are totally different people on the inside. No matter what, reality will conquer appearance.
