Appearances Are Destructive Analysis
Having a school uniform will promote learning since school uniforms lessen distractions taking place in the classroom. According to the article “Appearances are Destructive” author Mark Mathabane describes how teachers have shared their frustrations with being unable to teach students willing to learn because they are constantly being disrupted by other students who are concerned about their appearance. These students become so involved in how they look, that they are disturbing the whole class, with careless acts such as combing their hair, changing clothes, comparing labels, and asking other students for their opinion. With a dress code, students are less likely to be distracted by their appearance, and can concentrate on learning. A 2010

Students will be more comfortable with a dress code and still get to express themselves through fashion. In conclusion, school uniforms are not always beneficial. Children should have the right to appropriately dress for school. This right allows them to experiment with their creativity, imagination, and develop their personality. School should support diversity instead of equality by wearing the same outfit, because each and every student is different and unique. Diversity helps individuals to understand one another and helps spark interest. Clothing expresses a person’s rare personality and culture, it should be their right to show their peers their true…

School uniforms help improve students behavior in class because they are more focused and feel like they belong. For example students who wear uniforms will have better self-esteem. As stated “uniforms do eliminate competition, pressure and assaults perpetrated by older kids on younger students for their sneakers and possessions. They also help some students focus better In class” (Daniels 1). If lesser students are being picked on because of their clothes more students will have a lot of confidence with their classes. With uniforms students will feel like they belong in class. Also it is proven that less students drop out of school. To illustrate “ a study was released by the Harvard school of education research found that the Long Beach school district ,among six districts in the nations, 34 largest cities dramatically reduced their dropout rate”(Thompson 16). Uniforms are said to help students concentrate on the academic aspect of school. Most students need help to concentrate and sometimes thinking about the clothes they are wearing and what others say about them distracts them a lot. Middle schoolers are always trying the newest trends to see if they look good on them. They spend most of their time thinking what they might wear the next day to school and what the kid next to them might say. Uniforms give students room to think about other things that are more important at that moment. They might think about a question on a test or what topic to do on an essay. This policy enables them to give thought to what really matters. Some say there is a correlation between uniforms and test scores. Students show a higher academic achievement when in uniform.(Bodine, 2003.) Bodine said in 2003 that a research done in 1998 showed that uniformed students had significantly higher test scores than those students uniformed. All students want to get good grades because that way their parents do not punish…
