Abstract
The challenges of socio-economic instability in developing countries have negatively impacted the quality of health care services including nursing among others. Governments are finding ways or were forced to do more with less. It is just appropriate to explore the use of "Lean" principles and practices in hospitals that can create real value by reducing waste and improving productivity, costs, quality, and the timely delivery of health care services. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine recommended that nurses lead collaborative quality improvement efforts and assume a major role in redesigning health care in the United States. In this research, we will provide an overview of the use of Lean techniques in health care and at least 1 case study each of successful and unsuccessful nurse-directed Lean initiatives. The research aims to compare the 2 cases so as to determine the applicability of lean management in nursing in the future. The research then concludes with some lessons we have learned and implications of lean management in both nursing administration and education in the future. Keywords: lean management, nursing administration, health care services
