Applied Project
Knowing what research approach is more appropriate than another with a particular research question or population of interest relies heavily upon the type of conclusion that can be drawn from the research. It is stated in the text that, “It is important to evaluate the needs and circumstances of your research project before selecting a design”. (Landrum, R. E. (2012). Having said this, it is inevitable that the researcher is aware of the many factors that go along with research such as, the number of independent variables that are being manipulated, the areas of learning and memory and many more. Therefore, “Often the research question you are interested in dictates the type of design used”. (Landrum, R. E. (2012 sec. 3.1).

In order for psychologists to develop confidence in making these types of decisions it is important to know that the type of design influences the type of conclusion. (Landrum, R. E.). It is important that the psychologist is aware of the different methods of research as well as the limitations of the experiments.

I believe that in order for me as a researcher to build confidence in my abilities, it is important to always understand how to find information on the various research that has already been done, and to study the different methods that have been used in prior experiments. I believe that it is impossible for me to remember every method that is available yet, it is possible to know how to reference research. This should help with confidence building.

Research, systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge, is a central ingredient of the scientific method in psychology. It provides the key to understanding the degree to which hypotheses (and the theories behind them) are accurate. Just as we can apply different theories and hypotheses to explain the same phenomena, we can use a number of alternative methods to conduct research.…

For a potential researcher, choosing the correct research design is essential in the battle to control variables. Because without controlling for variables, a researcher is not able to make inferences about cause/effect relationships. Correlation does not imply causation is the all-important rule that any psychology undergraduate would be able to tell you. However, some research designs can be used in the absence of some variable control measures and still implying correlational relationships.…

Flashbulb memory is a distinctive and vivid memory. They are also long lasting, accurate and detailed. These memories are from personal circumstances surrounding a person’s discovery of shocking events. People remember these memories with clear details of the emotions they were feeling, the place where they were, and what they were doing when they first heard the news. These memories are so vivid that people can even remember irrelevant details, such as, weather or what they were wearing. Even though a flashbulb memory could be from previous years early, people can remember these memories like they just happened yesterday. Although, people remember what events happened on these certain days they can’t remember what they did the day before or possibly the day after. The aspect that makes these memories a lifelong memory is the emotion behind the memory.…

According to Burns & Grove (2001) the total approach of a study, from recognizing a question or problem, to developing a plan for answering the question is known as research methodology. This includes selecting participants, data collection, data analysis and dissemination. This chapter will focus on the research design and method for the proposed study. Bowling (2004) suggests that the choice of the appropriate research method is essential in order to achieve the aims and objectives of a study. According to Burns & Grove (2011) the blueprint to conducting any study lies within the research design. The design selected should be most suitable for the study in order to achieve the aims and objectives of the proposed research question (Barbour…
