In his book, Francis of Assisi, William R. Cook seeks to provide a better understanding of St. Francis of Assisi as an individual rather than in conjunction with the order he founded. Cook divides the book into six sections, each section concentrating on an important aspect or experience in Francis= life and spirituality. The six sections focus on his conversion; his relationship to the created world; the creation of the Christmas crib at Greccio; the role of learning; the relationship between the active and contemplative life; and his stigmatization at LaVerna in 1224.(pg. 18) In order to provide a general understanding I believe that these six sections can be narrowed down into three major themes that Cook sets forth; full surrender to God, a balance between world and self through an understanding of God=s will, and the importance of experiencing scripture over studying it. To support these themes Cook utilizes a number of reliable resources, both written and visual.…

Francis of Assisi is a comprehensive biography of one of the most holy and influential saints in medieval times written by Andre Vauchez. The book gives us insight into the life of Francesco di Bernadone, known to the Catholic Church as St. Francis of Assisi and the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, and his charismatic effects on the church and medieval society. Vauchez paints an embellishing picture of the charismatic St. Francis being a revolutionary idealist born in 1181 or 1182 that challenged the corruption of the Catholic Church and the average medieval Catholic’s way of life. St. Francis poised Catholics, should they want to live without sin, to live in the footsteps of Jesus Christ as was written in scripture and brought with him an onslaught of followers that forced the medieval Catholic community to adapt, though, not without resistance.…

The Last Supper is a unique painting. One of the reasons it is so different is that the canvas it is painted on is much wider than it is tall. By looking at the painting you can see that da Vinci is painting a gathering of people with the one in the middle of the table receiving most of the attention. The painting is most likely done on a canvas with simple oil paints. One feature a viewer might notice is Leonardo's use of rectangles. Whether this is intentional or serves any purpose is unclear, but other than the humans in the scene everything is a rectangular shape.…

The Last Supper has been and will be one of the most talked about works of Leonardo Da Vinci 's work of art. The work of art was started in 1495 and was completed in 1498; it contained the event depicted in the bible as the final days when Jesus announced that he would be betrayed by one of his twelve disciples." Leonardo had chosen to depict the moment when Jesus says, "One of you will betray me".1 The painting is located in the dining hall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan Italy. The painting was commissioned by Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. The painting it self has a massive presence of 15 feet high by 29 feet wide. Even though most facts stated that the painted was not completed until three years after it was started. It was also well known that Da Vinci was a procrastinator, meaning the he did not consistently work on the art for a time period of three years but on and off when he had the time, subjects and motivation. It is said that most of his time with the painting was looking for model for the art work it is said that when he working on the picture it 's self he would stare at it for hours and then climb the ladder and paint for hours. Upon walking into Gallery 250 of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, one will find on the wall a particularly eye-catching piece of art. The piece, set high on the corner of the wall encompassed by pictures depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, is Giulio Cesare Procaccini's The Scourging of Christ. In this piece, Procaccini's masterful use of light and shadows in a technique called chiaroscuro dramatically portray the torturing of Christ, and it is this very application of chiaroscuro that immediately caught my eye. Through his masterful rendition of value, Procaccini successfully evoked within me a crushing sensation of agony. While I did not initially realize that the piece was one of Christ, research enabled me to witness how daring and bold Procaccini was in being one of the few to depict the agony of Christ. Procaccini's The Scourging of Christ is important in its excellent display of the evocative powers of art, and also in its depiction of the seldom-explored topic of the agony of Christ.…

Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is a particularly well known painting to say the least. The painting depicts the last supper being shared by Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples. The painting represents the moment when Jesus Christ tells his disciples that one of them will betray him. The painting was made using a technique known as fresco, which caused the painting to deteriorate quickly. The painting was eventually restored and has been copied many times. Even in today’s culture, countless renditions are done of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper; many of the renditions take popular icons and have them mimic Jesus Christ and his disciples. Renditions of the painting vary from new painting styles all the way to scenes in a movie. The artwork I have selected is from the opening credits of a movie known as “Watchmen”. I believe the scene is a good representation of Leonardo’s The Last Supper in today’s pop culture.…

Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper is one of the most appreciated masterpieces in the world. This religious mural painting has as a mayor theme to represent the Christian event known as the Institution of the Eucharist. One can appreciate many elements of design in da Vinci's painting. For example, da Vinci uses mostly geometric shapes to represent the windows behind Jesus, the doors behind the apostles, and the ceiling. Next, lines are all over the painting, like in the borders of the table and its cover, and many curved lines depict the apostles' clothing. Also, color in this painting represents the different clothes wore by the apostles and Jesus himself. Color also helps the viewer to see the outside world through the windows behind Jesus. In addition, da Vinci uses simulated texture in a couple of places, like the ceiling, the clothes, and the table cover. Those spots on the painting look quite real and touchable. Finally, there is a constant rhythm in the ceiling.…

The Last Supper by Leonardo is very different to Tintoretto's representation of the same incident. The last supper is one of the most important occurrences which took place in the Christian religion such an important event that many have seen the need for the event visually recorded through art the two most famous of these representations are by far Tintoretto's and Leonardo's works. The Last Supper by Leonardo was created during the renaissance period and is a simple symbolic work with little emotion. Tintoretto however chose to represent the event in a surrealistic manner to give full impact; A way in which was typical of the art period in which he painted the work, the Mannerist period. The two works although essentially containing the same subject differ immensely. This difference is strongly evident through the artists contrasting use of colour, light, realism, technique perception and focal point/s.…

The sixteenth century witnessed the dramatic transformation from the symmetrical simplicity and preciseness of the High Renaissance, to the asymmetrical ambiguity and elegant illusion of the Mannerist Period. The Last Supper, a common theme in Renaissance painting, depicts Christ surrounded by his twelve disciples, seated at a long dining table. Leonardo da Vinci, the great, ambitious, pioneer of painting during the High Renaissance, illustrated consistency and symmetry in his version, while Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, painted his Last Supper with dramatic power, depth of spiritual vision, and glowing color: common characteristics of Mannerist paintings.…

The painting of the Last Supper is an important event in Jesus Christ’s life because it was his last meal in Jerusalem with his disciples before his crucifixion. According to Christians, Christ foretells that he will suffer soon after his meal and that it will be his last meal. After Christ predicted that he was having his last meal, he gives his followers a commemoration for his body and blood by taking a piece of bread and gave it them saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). The Last Supper consisted of his twelve disciples who were Christ’s closest followers who were men that travelled with Jesus and learned from him. The Last Supper was also an event where Christ announced that one of his twelve apostles would betray him. The twelve disciples involved were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James, Lebbaeus, Simon, and Judas. After Jesus’s death, the twelve disciples who were also known as apostles separated and began to spread Jesus’s teachings to others. There are various controversies about the Last Supper, that many paintings are created to show the meaning behind Christ’s last meal. There are various paintings of the Last Supper, but there are two particular portraits that particularly stand out because of the different controversy behind the painting.…
