“April Morning” by Howard Fast is a novel that takes place during the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775. The entire book takes place during a 24 hour time period. Adam Cooper is the antagonist in this novel. When Adam goes to bed on the eve of April 18, 1775 he is a boy. When he awakens the next morning he is forced to become a man. In the early hours of the morning he, along with the rest of the town, is awakened by a lone rider racing to Lexington to warn them that a British army, of maybe a thousand men, is marching their way. Immediately the town is in a frenzy to prepare for the British arrival. The book is about Adam’s journey during the Battle of Lexington. Adam Cooper is just 15 years old when he chooses to fight alongside his father in the Battle of Lexington. He is a brave and courageous character. He admits, at least to himself, that he is scared to fight but it does not prevent him from fulfilling his duty to his people. During the battle Adam reveals that he does not enjoy killing and shooting people. His character is full of sarcasm and curiosity. He is constantly questioning everything including God which was practically unheard of in his time. Moses Cooper is Adam’s father. He is a strong man who loves to argue and debate with anyone. He is tough on Adam, so much so that Adam is convinced that his father hates him. There is only one point in this novel where Moses shows any kind of affection towards Adam, and it is right before the battle where Moses is killed. Solomon Chandler is an older man whom Adam runs into while running away from two redcoat soldiers. Solomon takes Adam under his wing so to say for the rest of the battle. He comforts Adam and provides Adam a shoulder to cry on after Adams father is shot and killed. Later we find out that Solomon has a darker side to him when he is shooting the Redcoat soldiers and laughing like it is a game. Granny also known as Goody Cooper is Adams

For the Historical Book Report I decided to read April Morning by Howard Fast. This book takes place in the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Adam Cooper, one of the main characters, is a fifteen year old who lives with his family in Lexington, Massachusetts. He is oppressed ( as the book says) by his father, Moses Cooper, which means to keep someone in subservience and hardship. Not only does Adam get watched over , but his father questions whether or not his son is a man or not. This effects where and what he does. An example of this is when Adam wishes to attend a Township Committee meeting on April 18th , but he didn't go because his father didn't want him to. Since his father is very hard on him, he always relies on his Grandmother to make him feel better. Instead of going to the meeting, Adam goes to see his neighbor and second cousin, Ruth Simmons, she is the woman Adam can see marrying in the future, he loves her. When Moses got home from the meeting, Adam secretly listens in to his father telling his wife Sarah and Granny Cooper about news he heard at the meeting. He was talking about the British army potentially confronting us, so the colonial community is preparing. In Lexington, sometime after midnight the community is awakened with news that the British Army is on the march to Concord to take out munitions being stored by colonists for a possible rebellion. A muster, which is assemble troops, for inspection or in preparation for battle, is put together for the militia, and Adams signs up in the muster book and commit to the militia. Adams is very determined and set to go, for this reason Moses allows him to go and is right by him when he signs up. Sarah, Adams Mother, is very sad that he is going , but Moses explains how much Adams really wants to do this.…

In the battle of Lexington still acted like a boy. He feared the British. He ran away from them and was truly scared of the redcoats. Once he met Solomon Chandler, he realized that he wasn’t scared of the British anymore. This showed maturity in Adam. Adam came of age while traveling with Solomon Chandler. He learned that life went by and the death of his father didn’t mean the world would end. That was another important thing that showed Adam’s maturity. He understood the importance of his father’s death but knew that nothing would bring him back and that life had to go on. When the colonists prepared themselves to fight against the British for a second time, Adam saw the true color of war. He thought like a mature adult. He though that war was disgusting. He no longer felt warmth towards Solomon Chandler because Solomon enjoyed killing the British. Adam did not enjoy war. He fought against the British to get revenge for his father. While in war Adam got caught up in the war. Cousin Simmons had to pull him out of the shooting. If he didn’t Adam would have probably gotten shot. Adam comes of age during the fighting with the British, the talking with Solomon and the later fight with the British. He learns that life has to continue no matter what happens. This idea helped Adam come of age. Before the Battle with the British Adam was a boy that was often put down by his father and never spoke up or did anything brave. When signed the book to go off and fight, the journey of his coming of age…
