Conquest by the Cradle
Know: Thirteen Original Colonies
1. What was the significance of the tremendous growth of population in Britain's North American colonies?
Britain had an advantage over America with their population in 1700. If Americans wanted to revolt, Britain would outnumber them 25 to 1. However, in 1775, with the population increase (and continuing to increase), Britain’s advantage was weakening. There were now only 3 Europeans for each American. This essentially meant that Britain was losing power over America. More Americans = more American power.

2. What was the significance of large numbers of immigrants from places other than England?
The large numbers of immigrants made the “American man”. Because of the many immigrants from places
OUTSIDE of England, America became intermixed with several different ethnicities and backgrounds, making
America so culturally-diverse. Through generations, these ethnicities made the American race – a race of so many other races combined to make one.
The Structure of Colonial Society
Know: Social Mobility
3. Assess the degree of social mobility in the colonies.
17th century – high degree of social mobility. No classes, no one really had the “upper hand”. Colonial Americans were able to go from “rags to riches” with somewhat of an ease.
18th century – lots of social classes/stratification, hardly any social mobility. There was a top of the “social ladder” and there was a bottom – not much in-between.

4. How had the history of the Scots-Irish affected their characteristics?
In their history, they distanced themselves from the Anglican church. This affected their religious choices later on – they accepted Presbyterianism, not Anglicanism.
