19th Century American Art America in the 19th century was constantly changing. Industry had its first main beginnings, slavery was an important issue, a war was imminent... many things were going on. As all of this was occurring, artists from all over started painting about it. The paintings are great representations of the era, as they truly show what everything was like during the time, albeit with beautiful landscapes and different viewpoints of the time. The art of the 19th century in America well-depicts the growth of U.S. industry, westward expansion, and slavery. Many paintings of the 19th century depict America’s industrial growth. They show many innovations of the 19th century as well as the progress of everything. George Inness’s “Industrial Progress” (1855) shows a town in the distance, with a train riding on the railroad, and also arising steam is shown all over the painting, plus there are many tree stumps everywhere. The steam rising from the smokestacks reflects the innovation of steam in industry, and the tree stumps reflect the need of timber in America’s industry. One other painting reflecting America’s industrial growth is “American Progress” by John Gast (1872), which has some telegraph poles and railroads in the painting – these being some new innovations of industry at the time. Also, there are some ships on the right side of the page, and one can make out a bridge as well. These paintings mainly show breakthroughs of the 19th century, and though they both show America’s industrial progress at the time, “Industrial Progress” is much more inclusive. There are many paintings that show America’s westward expansion. Most of the west was undiscovered up until travelers began heading west to check what was there and also when many important resources, such as gold, were discovered in the west.
