Prompt: Using the following documents, analyze South African attitudes to Apartheid. Identify and explain one additional type of document and explain how it would help your analysis. During 1948 and 1994 Apartheid was a system of racial segregation enforced by the government of South Africa. The rights of the majority non-whites were restricted while the minority white population was maintained. These documents show economic, political, and social relations. The economic category is demonstrated in document 2. In population the majority had 19 million where as the minority had 4.5 million. Although, the white had more land than the blacks. The blacks had a land allocation of 13% and the whites had 87%. The national income black would get was far less than the whites. The blacks were getting a 20% or less income yet the whites had a 75% income. Blacks and whites had a ratio average of earning which was 360 rands for the blacks and 750 rands for the whites. The doctors population of the blacks differed greatly from the white. There was a ratio of 1 doctor out of 44,000 people for the blacks where as the whites had a ratio of 1 out of every 400. Since there was so little doctors the infant mortality rate for the blacks was 20% (urban) and 40 % (rural) where as the whites had a percentage of 2.7%. The annual expenditure on education/pupil was $45 or blacks and $699 for whites. Since there was a little amount of money for blacks amd big amounts of money for whites the teacher/pupil ratio was 1/60 for blacks and 1/22 for whites. "Under no circumstances may an employer pay Africans the same amount as white persons even if they do the same work. and the same hours." (doc.6) This law for document 6 shows that the blacks were treated unfairly. They couldnt have the same rights as a white man even if they both do the same thing. The political category is shown in documents 6,7,5 and 8. Document 6 provides laws that were made against black people. "No African may attend a birthday party if the number attending could make the gathering undisireble" (doc.6). This shows tha black peopkle were looked down upon. They couldnt have freedom or do the things they desired. Document 7 has a motivational attitude. It shows the flag and symbol of the African National Congress. This poster provies a way for the people to want to help the black peopleans gain their freedom. A call for a revolution began because of the political attitude. Document 5 demonstrates an unfair attitude. It shows a black mad displaying a mandatory passbook that non-whites were ordered to carry in order to travel. Just with this picture alone it provides you an image of how little freedom blacks had. This made theyre lives harder because if they were to forget it they would be punished deeply. "Dont vote in Apartheid election!" (doc.8). Document 8 shows a political attitude. It demonstrates a non-racial, anti-apartheid organization. They were trying to get people not to vote and to encourage people to fight for their freedom. In the social category documents 1,6,4, and 3 are demonstrated. Document shows how they moves the people around. Blacks were oushed into small areas while whites were able to rome around freely. The social attitude showed how segregation effected everyday lifes. Docuent 6 provies laws that controlls the freedom of non-whites. "No white madn may teach an African servant to read." (doc. 6). Black people were treated with no repect. They werent even allowed to read. These laws show how cruel the non-whites were treated. Document 4 shows how although segrregation was lifted the attitude didnt. You could easily see segregation between two races because of the social attitude. They domonstrate how they had different bus stops for blacks and whites. At hte end document 3 showed segregation by putting up signs. They would write the signs in both English and Afrikans. Even in a sign they distinctly seperated the blacks from the whites. Although all documents were sufficent some extra documents can be offered. A first hand point of view given personal understanding would have been a lot more credible. Overall all three groups had the same understanding of how unfairly the non-whites were treated while incorperating all the different attitudes.

    In 1948 the National Party, led the first campaign that was openly racist. The National Party won 80 seats (mainly from Afrikaner voters), compared to the United Party’s 64 seats. Following the elections, legal or enforced apartheid or racial segregation officially began in 1948. It was not a new idea, but had been prevalent under the Dutch in colonial times. Legislation followed which separated the population into four racial groups (eventually changing in 1950 to three) with different rules for each. Suddenly racial discrimination was institutionalized (The History of Apartheid in South Africa, 1978). Residential areas, education, medical care, and other public services were separated. It is sad to say that the services were widely disparate in comparison to the services to white people which were vastly superior to the services to the non-white population.
