This work has been divided into two main parts: 1. An in-depth study of sounds used in underwater wildlife documentaries and films, looking at the reasons and acceptability of the use of constructed foley sounds.
2. The research and capture of original sound materials belonging to the underwater environment and its inhabitants.
• For undertaking this research I searched for books and journals in the library including archival footage, films, photographs and official publications.
• I went to the university library and did a search for all available resources relating to both the history and evolution of documentaries, and the history and evolution of sound. Any books, journals, academic papers or archival footage, which …show more content…
(Aqua Lung is the name that first introduced the world to Scuba diving in 1943 when Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan developed the first "Aqua-Lung.). The Aqua-Lung allows a diver to descend to specific depths (under 20 meter) for a limited time and swim freely wile breathing compressed air from a cylinder on the divers back. Cousteau studied the sea and wrote the first in-depth analysis that went on to form a book, titled The Silent World in 1953. Following the development of his ground breaking discoveries of animals and plants through to present day. Underwater sound in current documentaries will then be analysed and contrasted with its predecessor method by studying the vast amount of present day documentaries, books and research papers that are available on the topic. Understanding the foundations of underwater sound recordings are vital in order to analyse how the style has evolved and thus a very important aspect leading to understanding the need for the creation of foley sounds. Why was there a need …show more content…
A rigid hulled inflatable boat, (RHIB) or rigid inflatable boat (RIB) is a lightweight but high performance a high capacity boat fashioned with a solid, V-shaped hull and flexible rubber tubes. The design is stable and seaworthy up to a force 10 gale. The design of the inflatable tubes allows the vessel to maintain buoyancy even if a large quantity of water is washed aboard due to bad sea conditions. It is fully fitted with 2 trunk style draining system and 3 anchors; sea, plough and grapnel. An anchor is a device, normally made of metal, (a sea anchor is a tough nylon, parachute design) and used to connect a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the craft from drifting due to wind or
