Veterinarians must be very skillful in many different areas. The most important skill a vet needs is a passion for animals and a desire to keep animals healthy and happy. A marine life vet working at a marine animal rescue facility may treat animals injured by predators, passing boats, natural disasters, oil spills or even disease outbreaks. Aquarium and zoo vets may monitor the animal’s health and behavior in animal hospitals. Others may dive in with the fish in their natural habitat, the ocean and work on ships.
To become a veterinarian, a bachelor's degree and a 4 year medical degree is needed. Very few veterinary medical schools have a concentration in marine animals. Only 28 US schools have aquatic veterinary medicine majors including the University of Florida, University of California and Texas A&M. All vets need a state license to practice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “the veterinarian profession is projected to grow at a much more rapid rate that the average for all professions- at a rate of nearly 33% from 2008-2018.” Marine life veterinarians make on average about $88,000. They can make up to $142,00 and the bottom 10 percent may earn wages of $47,000.
This career is interesting to me because I love marine animals and take care of them. If I were to pursue this career I would definitely choose to work in a marine rescue facility. The work would constantly be changing with new task and a different situation. This would allow me to be able to learn new things everyday and be updated on new discoveries.
