The first story I will be discussing is Araby. The themes of hope in Araby are about the narrator, who cannot stop thinking about Mangan’s sister, and how he thinks of the bazaar as a getaway. While going through all the activities of his daily life, which are just boring to him, Mangan’s sister gives the narrator new-found joy. Which at first he is very shy to talk to her, but they have a conversation and he promises to get her something from the bazaar. Up to this point, he is still in his hopes about reaching the bazaar and it being something special for him. However this is where the disappointment comes at the end of the story when the narrator reaches the bazaar, it is very late and closing. There is only one shop open with expensive items he looks around the shop and it’s not what he imagined it to be. The narrator can’t afford to buy the items that are on sale there...He then starts to realize that what he thinks about Managan’s sister isn’t actually true and she will disappoint him just as the bazaar had just done. The hope coming in when she hears about the tragic death of her husband which is somewhat of a disappointment at first for her as she is crying in her room then, later on, she starts to realize through the open window and the sky Kate Chopin writes on page 2 Louise whispers to herself over and over again “Free! Body and soul Free!” she is hoping for a bright future single and free of a relationship which she loved at sometimes and didn’t at others. She would be living for herself so is she in a lot of hope thinking of all the future summer days and enjoying them herself and having no one argue or tell her what to do in a sense she would be on her own and this gave her a new outlook and happiness of life after accepting that her husband has passed away. However, the ending is very ironic and leads to extreme disappointment and death even at that. Louise walks down the steps with her sister to see her husband hasn’t died and is actually still alive the shock from this actually kills Louise when the doctors came in they explained that “she had died of heart disease of joy that kills” written also on page two of story of an hour, interpreting this myself I believe she had died from the realization that all her new hopes and dreams of being a free single women had all just came down crashing in a split second causing her to have a fatal death.
