Primary eye care encompass from refractive services to the diagnosis and management of ocular pathologies. With the steadily evolving field of technology, eye care services are more fine tuned and this enable optometrists and other eye care practitioners to provide even better eye health services to patients. Though not many independent optometrists have the luxury of having some of the costly technology in the practices, I personally feel that they should be allowed to have easy access to them in order to provide the best patient management in their practice.…

The three legs of the medical stool are costs, access and quality. There are many factors when some hospitals or health care in general would trade-off in these areas depending on the status of the patient, insurance and the situation. I feel that the one that is neglected the most is costs, this is why the GDP in healthcare is higher than any other contributor in the world. I believe that if the cost of insurance, procedures and medications were at a better rate or more affordable that a lot of people including the world wouldn’t have a high debt amount from hospital or healthcare bills. The downfall to that is the doctors want to get paid, so depending on what is done this can either effect the patient or the doctor. If the doctor gets impacted moneywise then this can typically lead to the lack of care for their patients. This isn’t always the case but at the end of the day there is no such thing as a free lunch.…

For my inspiring character I have chosen Chris Kyle the American Sniper. Chris was a navy seal and had finished four full tours in the Iraq war; he had 160 confirmed kills and is known to be the deadliest sniper in U.S history. During those tours he had to deal with racism, hatred, and a people that were too afraid to tell them if their whole platoon was going to walk into a building where they would be killed or if they were driving down a road with I.E.D’s. He had made this world a better place by taking down key targets in the Iraq war and even started his own squad of elite soldiers to hunt down the men responsible for the rebellion and a sniper that American soldiers feared and on top of it all he had a family to raise. He played a crucial role in the Iraq war and really fought hard…

I (the casewriter) arrived early at 7.00 a.m. at the outpatient department of the Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai, India. My sponsor, Thulasi (R.D. Thulasiraj, hospital administrator) was expecting me at 8.00 o’clock, but I came early to observe the patient flow. More than 100 people formed two lines. Two young women, assisted by a third, were briskly registering the patients at the reception counter. They asked a few key questions: “Which village do you come from?” “Where do you live?” “What’s your age?” and a few more, but it all took less than two minutes per patient. The women seemed very comfortable with the computer and its data-entry procedures. Their supervisor, a somewhat elderly man with grey hair, was hunched over, gently nudging and helping them along with the registration process. He looked up and spotted me. I was the only man in that crowd who wore western-style trousers and shoes. The rest wore the traditional South Indian garment (“dhoti” or “veshti”), and many were barefooted they could not afford “slippers”. The old man hobbled from the registration desk and made his way towards me. The 50-foot distance must have taken him 10 minutes to make because he paused every now and then to answer a question here or help a patient there. I took a step forward, introduced myself, and asked to be guided to Thulasi’s office. “Yes, we were expecting you” he said with an impish smile and walked me to the right wing of the hospital where all the administrative offices were. He ushered me into his office and pointed me to the couch across from his desk. It was only when I noticed his crippled fingers that I realized this grand old man was Dr. Venkataswamy himself, the 74-years-old ophthalmic…
