While reading I begin to evaluate myself as a student. Am I the typical student that claims to not have enough time or the student that only studies right before the test? I know that I knew the things that Leamnson is saying to be true, however I was not applying those things to my own work habits. Many times I have felt like I have learned a topic in school but I was missing the understanding and the remembering. I was understanding the content but I was not remembering which means I had learned nothing. Without maintaining the information and remembering what…
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand," Confucius said. When students only hear what is being taught in the classroom, they might be confident that they will remember it just because it seems like simple information, some might remember but a majority of them will eventually forget at some point. When the Teacher or lecturer writes information on the board and explains it, more students might have a better chance at remembering the information because it is set at a visual and auditory viewpoint rather than being only limited to an auditory standpoint. But seeing and hearing alone is not enough when it comes to the educational and academic field, students become unstoppable when they are…
Many times, teachers want a student to just push back the information that was taught. Both my history class and phycology class was like that so I made flashcards to remember definitions. There was not really a need to go beyond that for I knew I was not going to get tested that way. Moreover, when it comes to a classes like math I never had to remember definitions it is all about actually doing the work. I always turn my phone off when it comes to studying because I know that I will stop studying to read a text or see a notification which interrupts my concentration on the subject. When I study, I try to go someplace quite so I can concentrate. Some people like to place music; but that is something I cannot due because I get to easily distracted. I am someone who has always struggled when it comes to math so I do fall into the category of believing there are some students who are inheritably good at certain subjects. This is a belief that is an excuse, as the professor alludes to, for me not to study harder for the class. A way to change that would be for me to carve out time and study more for the classes I do not like. For me it is easy to study history because I like it and sometimes I do spend too much time studying for that subject because I like it and not enough in the subjects I struggle in because they do not interest…
Samarth, some students don't understand this. They believe that studying means reading over class notes that they have copied from the whiteboard over the term. In fact, the definition of 'study' that I have explained to you above involves much more than reading notes. It involves answering questions related to your subject, whether those questions come…
“How students really study and does it matter?” was an actual study performed on 229 students in an Introductory Psychology Class. The professor, Regan A.R. Gurung, did this to see how different study methods affected the students test scores.…

However, using the suggested study techniques may yield a positive result. For example, the student scored low in the musical intelligence. It may benefit the student to “take music breaks” (Carter, et.al., 2007, p. 44). The pupil could go to a quiet area and listen to various songs that may help set the mood for the student to focus on what she is studying. This may assist in clearing the mind to become ready for information to be absorbed. Also to help memorize certain knowledge the learner may break down the information and rap it back to herself. This could improve the retention of the data the student is…
A student’s goal is to make sense of any and all information presented to them. In order to do so, we must compare and connect it to what we already know. As a toddler, a child learns the letters and numbers; in elementary, a student learns multiplication…
It’s true that education has always played an important part in our lives, but studying without understanding ever helps one in its professional life. We have seen a lot of college students including myself like to study a night before our exams, which could give us a result of a failure. Our results are based on our learning power, and if our learning power is lesser then the course material then it will make us feel as if we are in some deep trouble. The problem is not that we are in some trouble of failing the course or getting dropped from class because we can’t make it, but the problem is that our teachers should encourage us and make our course easier for us to understand. How can a teacher do that? As O’ Malley said by give student’s in-class tests, quizzes after every chapter or part of study, and give assignments to do, so…
Students who take a surface approach to learning tend to be those who see education solely as something necessary for career success ii. The surface approach to learning is related to aspects marked by an intention to complete the task (or learning) requirements. Specifically there is a focus on the 'signs' such as the text itself and on discrete elements, along with the memorisation of information and procedures for assessment. Also evident is the unreflective association of concepts and facts; a failure to distinguish principles from evidence or new from old; the treatment of the task as an external imposition and finally external emphasis, such as the demands of the assessment and knowledge remaining separate to everyday reality ii…
While it is unfair to expect teachers to fully grasp the psychological & cognitive complexities that comprise learning, they should have a solid understanding that individual students have different preferences in the way they prefer to receive, perceive, interact and respond to information; known as their preferred “Learning style”.…
There are different factors which affect learning and could make a huge impact on learner achievement. It is important that these factors are addressed to enable a learner to maximise their chances of succeeding in their studies. Good and bad experiences can affect learning and could determine the learner’s failure or success. The theories of learning can be generally classed as humanist, cognitive, behaviourist, neo-behaviourist, andragogy and gestalt. Behaviourist, gestalt and cognitive theories of learning lays its emphasis on how children learn, however andragogy seems to be centred around how adults learn. Each of these learning theories aims to explain the reasons for learning in different situations. It is essential, as teachers in the life-long learning sector, that we understand the complex nature of teaching which is supported by different theories of learning.…
In my family, education plays a serious role. My parents taught me to study hard. Nevertheless, I personally viewed these ideas childishly and impractically. I told myself that it would be a waste of time to try too hard and fully absorb any of the material I was studying. What I did was to study enough to gather the facts. I used to taste ideas, chew on them for as long as it took to survive in class, and then, after tests, spit them out. Grades, after all, had served as the most powerful element in my educational view. As a matter of fact, while my grades were thriving, my mind was stagnating.…
Some students have photographic memories, some students are amazing with memorization, some students can study for weeks and not understand anything, some students learn so much better with the hands on approach, others do better by simply reading.…
Internet nowadays is a distraction to the students because of social networking sites. Others are distracted because of pornography. While some wants to be famous that is why the internet is a distraction. As the year level of students in school becomes higher, their study habits differ from time to time. The kind of study habits they have shows the differences or improvements in how they become skilled and earnest about learning new things. Studying does not only include the preparation of students to excel in class but also the reinforcements of the lessons already taught. It is merely reviewing and committing to mind…
