Thorin is a very brave man who must lead the group in their darkest hour. He is under great pressure as the “son of Thrain and grandson of Thror, King under the Mountain,”(195). So when he gandalf leaves the group for other business Thorin takes up the leader role immediately. He is faced with many challenges as they travel to the lonely mountain. At one point his title gave them the rest they needed when he responded to this question,”’Who are you and what do you want?’”(195). Once they heard he was the King under the mountain
the people gladly gave them shelter and whatever they needed as the people of the long lake-laketown rejoiced. When Thorin and the group reach their destination and successfully get inside the mountain he once again becomes the leader responding to anyone outside as enemies,”’Who are you,’ he called in a very loud voice,’ that come as if in war to the gates of Thorin son of Thrain, King under the Mountain, and what do you desire’?”(262). Thorin once again shows he is the leader and defends them when needed most. Throughout the adventure he shows he has grown into a position of great heroics and leadership ending his adventure bravely defending his kingdom but falling to the goblins. He has become a hero to
