Criminals must always be held accountable for their thoughtful and cunning offence. In most juvenile cases, the court doesn’t hand out the right punishment for teens. Not giving the right penalty only allows them to learn nothing and take advantage of the situation. The idea of the juvenile offender not being old enough to understand what they are doing stands strong. However, some crimes they undertake are inexcusable no matter their age. Juveniles should have the option to life in prison without parole since the juvenile court system is outdated and age shouldn’t matter. To start off, age shouldn't matter no matter what the crime is. A study about teens proves,“one-quarter of juveniles can function in a manner very similar to adults”.(Weir) Many juveniles can think and act like an adult offender making them just as dangerous. Mary speaks about the system, “youth today are taking advantage of this lenient and outdated system and are committing violent crimes because they believe they will get off easy”(Onelia)Flaws in the system allow juveniles to take advantage of it and their punishment is not as harsh as it should be. Additionally, if their punishment is not as harsh there is a chance they could re-commit the crime. Adding on , “The juvenile justice system was originally created to provide individualized rehabilitation to offenders of minor crimes such as truancy, shoplifting, and vandalism”(Onelia)The system was created to attend to minor offenses, but teens that are committing far more serious crimes now take advantage of how the system benefits them. Also, the penalty is the same no matter what the crime is.Overall, the justice system is obsolete and not ready for serious crimes that youth are committing today without a real punishment letting them enact the same
