Social networking is not a new phenomenon. Social networking consists of websites that allow users to stay connected with their family members, friends and to make new friends online through free web-based programs. (Nations) Social networking started when there was a website called sixdegrees.com whose designers believed that all people in this world are related somehow with in the range of six degrees separation. For example, Abby and Bella are friends and Bella has a sibling called Cindy. Therefore, Abby and Cindy are related by one degree. Moreover, if Cindy has a friend named Debby, Abby and Debby are related by two degrees and so forth. (Social Networking) Then there were many more other social networking sites that have developed. The AsianAvenue.com, Migente.com, and Blackplanet.com were developed and released while sixdegrees.com has closed due to numerous viruses, spam, and slow development complaints. Later on, Friendster.com further developed the idea of sixdegrees.com as a circle of friends in 2002. Linkedin was launched in 2003 since it helped so many people get their jobs by posting resumes in their Linkedin profiles. Cyworld was popular among Korean users since 2001 and was introduced to the US in 2006. And a new phenomenon was released from Harvard, Facebook and Twitter by Jack Dorsey in 2006. (Nickson) “Are social networking sites good for our society?” I take the position that they are good because they allow people to reconnect with their old friends, increase communication inside the family, and allow business to grow. Social networking has become very popular. It makes up 17% of all internet activities. (Social Networking – Procon.org) They are past time internet programs where users can, in addition to, expressing themselves without limit, play games and experience numerous applications. However, the most important thing is they just want to keep in touch with their friends or family through
