Are Video Games Art?

Video games are not always seen as form of art in the real world. However, many people disagree with this claim. Some people define art as the expression of creative skill and imagination usually appearing in a visual form. Those people say that video games should fall in this category and be accepted as a form of art. Others say that video games should not be considered a form of art for various reasons. Honestly, video games are a new type of art that people in the future will have to get use to. Since video games are works of art that require creative invention, they should be appreciated at the same level as other art media. Even if some critics don’t think that video games are a form of art, that does not mean that society can not transition into the idea that they are art. In 2011, the Supreme Court made a decision to give video games the same right as other forms of art. Schiesel reported in the New York Times that, “ It is now the law of the United States that video games are art. It is now the law of the United States that video games are a creative, intellectual, emotional form of expression and engagement, as fundamentally human as any other.” This statement means that the Supreme Court has made the decision that video games are. This proves that it is a law in the United States that video game are a form of art as well. The court defines video games as an art that is “creative, intellectual, and emotional.” They defined a video game the same way that the definition of art is seen. On the Reason website, Nick Gillespie made his claim about video games being a form of art. In his article he used certain political figures quotes to back up his claim. The quote he used were, “a responsibility to our kids and our communities to protect against the effects of games that depict ultra-violent actions.” When governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made this statement, he sparked the call for change for video games. Arnold’s claims were diminished once the Supreme Court decision had been mades. As seen, they both are cause and effect. The Supreme Court mostly happened do to Arnold’s actions against video games. Maybe, this happened for the better of everything.
Certain games are don’t have strong artistic values, but there are plenty of games that have high artistic morals. Some games are really just created for entertainment purposes. However, there are other games that are beautiful in design and recapture a beautiful
