Are you born with your sexual identity or do you choose it ?
Identifying your sexual identity comes from a very young age. It starts when you first discover your genitals at months of you being born. Then you chose whether you want to play with stereotyped toys that are identified for boys or girls. After that, you learn gender role behavior, where you either do things “that boys do” or “that girls do”. Another influence towards gender identification are social relationships, starting as early as preschool, the gender of the people the child decides to be with is the gender he or she will imitate. During elementary school years, children are most involved with those of their same sex, boys often voice a strong dislike for girls and vice versa. Characteristics are also picked up from the men and women around them, incorporating these traits to their own personalities. Family studies show that effeminate boys, those who prefer female activities or have an intense interest in female things, often have unusually close relationships with their mothers and distant ones with their fathers. The mothers tend to encourage and support “female” activities in their sons. A large connection to sexual identity is sexual orientation, which can play a role with gender confusion.
Sexual orientation refers to whether you are sexually or romantically attracted to men, women, or both. People who are normally attracted to the opposite sex are considered heterosexual and identify themselves as being straight. People who are attracted to the same sex are considered homosexual and identify themselves as gays or lesbians. Then, there are people who are attracted to both sex who are considered bisexual and identify themselves as bi.
