The most popular song in the album Get Born was actually the song I chose, Are You Gonna Be My Girl. It was voted number one in the 2003 Triple J Hottest 100, an annual music poll hosted by a national Australian radio station. Are You Gonna Be My Girl is a song that made a lot of people happy, a lot of people annoyed, and it also made Jet superstars. In the interview with the lead singer of Jet, Nic Cester, he mentioned that he was inspired and also trying to evoke the excitement just like the band Easybeats or the Rolling Stones.
I myself am not a big fan of rock music, I listen to pop music more often, however I found the elements in this song are really interesting that if you just read the lyrics literally, you won’t be able to interpret those elements that objectify women. Are You Gonna Be My Girl illustrates the male dominance over female, and that dominance objectifies women. The objectification of women serves throughout the whole song, that the phrase “are you gonna be my girl” and “that I really wanna make you mine” repeated few times, which amplify the matter of objectifying
