Are You Former Be My Girl: Song Analysis
The song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” was song by an Australian rock band — the Jet. The Jet, formed their band in 2001, dissolved in 2012 but reformed again in 2016. Before they dissolved, they had produced four albums over a decade and their first debut album Get Born was released in 2003 and actually made its band’s popularity rocketed.

The most popular song in the album Get Born was actually the song I chose, Are You Gonna Be My Girl. It was voted number one in the 2003 Triple J Hottest 100, an annual music poll hosted by a national Australian radio station. The album itself Get Born received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics but of course it had some negative reviews as well. Are You Gonna Be My Girl starts with brisky hooks and handclaps, along with the lyrics about girls with big black boots and long brown hair, it distilled the style and swagger of 1960s rock acts like and The Rolling Stones into 200 seconds.

Are You Gonna Be My Girl is a song that made a lot of people happy, a lot of people annoyed, and it also made Jet superstars. In the interview with the lead singer of Jet, Nic Cester, he mentioned that he was inspired and also trying to evoke the excitement just like the band Easybeats or the Rolling Stones.

I myself am not a big fan of rock music, I listen to pop music more often, however I found the elements in this song are really interesting that if you just read the lyrics literally, you won’t be able to interpret those elements that objectify women. Are You Gonna Be My Girl illustrates the male dominance over female, and that dominance objectifies women. The objectification of women serves throughout the whole song, that the phrase “are you gonna be my girl” and “that I really wanna make you mine” repeated few times, which amplify the matter of objectifying

    Pink’s “Stupid Girls” is about the way the media portrays women and how that portrayal influences the behavior of women in society. Pink conveys this message through the use of her lyrics and the historical context from the song. When Pink says, “Maybe if I act like that, that guy will call me back”, she seems to be saying that the media sends women the message that the way women in the media communicate with men is the way they should be doing it as well.
