Area of Study: The Inner Journey
Related text 1: The Godfather (novel)
In this novel by Mario Puzo, an inner journey is taken by Michael Corleone. This inner journey is linked with My Place in the way that Michael’s journey involves him searching for a link with his family and their past. This novel’s perspective of the inner journey is an acceptance of your past and greeting your destiny. The inner journey of Michael is conveyed using techniques such as isolation, metaphors and comparison. At the start of the book, Puzo describes Michael “not standing with his father and brothers” at the wedding. This shows Michael’s physical isolation as he refuses to take part in family affairs. His journey starts when his father is shot. Michael offers to kill the men who tried to assassinate his father. As time goes on, Michael is taking on more responsibility in family affairs and is progressing into the world of his fathers and the future that has been built for him.
This offer is used by Puzo as a metaphor to symbolize Michael’s taking a more active role in the family business. Michael is constantly compared to his father and this technique of comparison shows Michael molding into the man his father is, example such as “at that instant, he was a reincarnate of the Don himself”. Michael’s final stage of development is when he says “tell my father I wish to be his son”. Michael has now accepted his position as Don of the family. These techniques have been utilized by Puzo in order to illustrate the stages of Michael’s inner journey.
This text has enhanced complemented my understanding of the Area of study as it shows a fine example of an inner journey that a protagonist undergoes. It is very relevant to the topic as it can be easily linked to Sally Morgan’s inner journey. As Michael becomes increasingly aware of his family background,
