I am writing this letter to inform you about why I believe Euthanasia should be legal in Australia. You as a human being should know that if you loved someone who was suffering a great deal of pain and they told you all they wanted to do was die, would you just stand there knowing there was nothing you could do or would you gain the dignity that would allow them to die in peace. So why is it that when it comes to the suffering of our human family members, no such dignity is offered in Australia? It seems absurd that pets have more rights when it comes to dying peacefully than their human counterparts.
The topic of Euthanasia has been the subject of moral, religious, philosophical, legal and human rights debate in Australia for many years. According to the Australian Medical Association, Euthanasia is defined as ‘The act of deliberately ending the life of a patient for the purpose of ending intolerable pain and/or suffering. The great debates stems from two contradicting notions held within society: the right for individuals to choose to die with dignity when suffering and the need to uphold the moral right to life for every person. Currently, in Australia Euthanasia is illegal, however, there have been many countries that have recognised the need to allow an individual to …show more content…
terminate their life with dignity. Many countries after legalising Euthanasia have come to a conclusion that the death rate has been decreased greatly. Lindy Willmott, professor of law at the Queensland University of Technology stated that "There is evidence that the instances in which doctors kill people without their express request has in fact decreased in the Netherlands since 2002 when the legislation was introduced,"
Today is it known fact that many people in Australia believe Euthanasia should be Legal?
According to the Australian Institute of data, it was revealed that when asked if a doctor should be allowed to the end the life of a person experiencing "unrelievable and incurable suffering'', 70.6 per cent agreed euthanasia should be legal. (YAMINE, 2014) This shows that public supports it and that if it were to be legal it would be civil and unlikely that anything would happen to the government. The fact of the matter is that people believe it’s such a horrible thing, if you were to go along with this it would change many people’s lives around the world for the
better.
Why is it that you are depriving people who are in endless suffering the chance to be in peace and without pain? I am curious as to how a person who is capable and self-sufficient can end their life without moral consequences, but those who are impaired and debilitated cannot. I believe that all humans are granted with the right to choose. The patient should be given the opportunity to choose between prolonged pain and death. It is unethical to suspend the patient in an interval of severe misery, and observe as their condition deteriorates. I believe people should have to go through a whole process, such as counselling and other forms of therapy to make sure their decision is clear of whether they want to go through with the Euthanasia. You can take a life but there is no undo button - once it’s done, it’s done. Death is a forever thing.

In the end I realize the choice is up to you for whether you want to legalise Euthanasia in Australia, all I’m trying to get across to you is that people should have a right to choose when, where and how they die and we should not deprive them whether they want to wait and hope they will get healthier or be Euthanised and not have to suffer anymore. the choice of not just existing as a shell of a person until their heart stops beating but the choice of being able to end your life should the situation arise. It is not a decision to be made lightly and communication with those who will be affected by this decision is a must. The outcome of legalising Euthanasia will allow people to choose to die with dignity when suffering a terminal illness; their loved ones would not need to endure prolonged suffering as they know that the death was by choice.
