CHEICAL BASIS OF LIFE
OUTLINE
The human body is composed of chemicals.
Chemistry describes the composition of substances & how chemicals react with each other.
STRUCTURE OF MATTER
ELEMENTS are composed of atoms, which are the smallest unit of element
MATTER is composed of elements
ATOMIC STRUCTURE
• A complete atom is electrically neutral
• Atom consists of elements, protons, & neutrons
• Electrons are negative charge &
• Neutrons are uncharged( neutral)
• Atomic number is equal to the number of protons in each atom.
• Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different atomic weight
BONDING OF ATOMS
When atoms combine, they gain, lose, or share electrons.
When atoms LOSE electrons they become positively charged ions & when atoms GAIN electrons they become negatively charged ions.
HYDROGEN BOND is the attraction of positive to negative portions of polar covalent molecule.
MOLECULES AND COMPOUNDS
MOLECULE – two or more atom of the same element bond
MOLECULAE COMPOUND- atoms of different elements may bond.
FORMULA- molecular formula represents the number & types of atoms in a molecule & STRUCTRAL FORMULA –depicts the arrangement of atoms within a molecule.
CHAPTER 3
CELLS
CHAPTER OUTLINE
The shapes of cells make possible their functions. Cells are different in size, shape, & function
COMPOSITE CELL
A cell has a cell membrane, cytoplasm, & nucleus
ORGANELLS- perform specific functions
The nucleus controls over all cell activities because it contains DNA the genetic material
CELL MEMBRANE is a selectively permeable passage way.
CELL MEMBRANE is made up of protein, lipid, & carbohydrate molecules
Cell membrane is BILAYER of phospholipid molecules
CYTOPLASM –contains organelles, cytoskeleton, suspended in CYTOSOL
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM transports protein & lipids in cytoplasm
RIBOSOMS synthesize protein
CENTROSOME contains centrioles that aid in distributing chromosomes during cell division
VESICLES contain
