What if there was a way to significantly deteriorate the amount of accidents caused not oy by drunk drivers but by all drivers on the road. Driverless cars are the answer. They eliminate human error by using computers and technology. drove this car should be on all roads because they promote efficiency, and also list the amount of traffic on the roads. One of the many advantages to the use of driverless cars is that it allows people to be efficient in the way of multitasking. As mentioned in the article by Tony Borroz "While being taken from here to there in a driverless car, you can do anything." This shows pure efficiency because not only are you going from place to place but you are also taking care of other personal things. This allows people to be able to text their friends and not worry about focusing on the road at all times. Also mentioned in the same article this will cause "more productive use of traveling time and increased network capacity." So instead of …show more content…
As mentioned in the article Pros and Cons of a Driverless Future "one car will know where the other cars are and keep an equal distance between them because the will know when the other will stop or slow down". This will allow for an easier and less stressful ride for everyone. There will be no sitting around in parking lots of traffic on the highway when you are supposed to be driving at sixty plus miles per hour. In the same artical it tells us about how "driverless cars ran in correlation to that of a train." This would be extremely revolutionary. The transition itself to self driving cars could be costly and dangerous. Self driving cars would be very expensive, so not every person could afford to own one. The danger of the transition comes in when the self driving cars have to take into account the cars that are still operated by people: “‘autonomous drive vehicles are a wonderful idea, but the transition from driver-operated to driverless is likely to be filled with accidents.’ For instance, while approaching a traffic light, a self-driving car calculates that if it speeds up a little bit, it will be able to pass through the light, but the driver in the car in front decides to stop because he thinks he won’t make it on time. What do you think the result will be?” (Ramirez). The most controversial part of self driving cars however, is how the computer inside the car will decide whose life is more important in the case of an inevitable accident. “the cars will be designed to avoid accidents, but ‘If it happens where there is a situation where a car couldn’t escape, it’ll go for the smaller thing.’ But what if the smaller thing is a child?” (Spangler). It is very difficult to determine whose life is more important, and even more difficult to program a car to…

The subject is being researched and developed calling them autonomous vehicles exclaiming the need to ensure the passengers are safe when driving by removing the human error of being distracted. Yet, the major issues preventing it will not be easy to overcome. Unless all cars would be autonomous no amount of sensors, cameras. or computer programming will be able to cope with other driver’s instincts and actions. Concerning cost more technology will come at a larger cost, of which many will be unable to afford. (The self-driving function is stated by) Even still, an autonomous car can crash, or get cashed into just as any other would, only you'd be helplessly along for the ride. The reaction time or decisions made by a car in certain situations may not make sense. To serve as a point think of a natural disaster, flooding could prevent the car from going a certain path or leave it damaged and stuck. If the car is programmed to follow the road what will happen if its blocked, or what if a family wishes to drive through the uncharted woods? Another example is provided by Durbin as he said how “There are still some situations in which humans outperform computers. At a four-way stop, for example, a driver can crane his neck, scan for traffic in any direction and quickly determine the speed of any oncoming vehicles. So far,…

Over the years, the world has seen a rapidly increasing number of teen involvement in drunk and reckless driving cases, specifically from the time periods 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. A 12 a.m. curfew on weekends and a 10 p.m. curfew on weekdays would help to protect teens and others on the roads late at night from getting into troublesome or dangerous situations. In my town of Leesburg, Virginia, a 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. curfew is placed on anyone under the age of 18 on all days of the week. The curfew is used to minimize the amount of inexperienced teens on the road during hours where driving can be difficult due to things like fatigue and/or the influence of illegal substances. Many teens don't see the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol late at night or driving late at night at…

Over time, as the frequency of crashes is reduced, cars and trucks could be made much lighter. This would increase fuel economy even more” (Anderson). Our country’s current transportation system is incredibly inefficient as drivers spend much of their travel time slowing down, speeding up, or staying stopped uselessly. The reason we have this current system in place is that humans are not able to work flawlessly in a complex system that would allow drivers to remain moving through an intersection at a high speed. Autonomous cars would eventually eliminate this system as they would be able to complete these complex tasks that humans are not capable of. Today's drivers are sick of getting stuck at red lights with no cross traffic in sight, a…

Many crashes and court cases have to do with people under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Autonomous cars will fix deaths from crashes because of driving while under the influence. In about 53 minutes someone dies from driving with alcohol in their system, and 16% of vehicle crashes were from people with drugs in their system. Lastly, More than 100 million people die every year because of drunk driving, that's a little less than one-third of us population!(centers for disease control and prevention 1). Autonomous cars may save drunk drivers but there are many problems with it. Many people stay away from drinking and drugs on nights where they drive home because they don’t want to crash. These cars will influence the use of drugs and alcohol throughout the world. This will also make it easier for, people to transfer illegal drugs across the United states and in other countries. many people are caught with illegal drugs when they are driving weird and the police can smell the scent. It will be harder for them to become arrested which will make many people smuggle them into their cars because they will rarely ever get pulled over. Safety is the main purpose behind driverless cars which will benefit not only the people but also the environment in so many ways. The two main factors that Google has focused on their car are helping people their save time and their life. Google cars can reduce commute time by 90%, and traffic accidents by 90% (Mui, Part 1). Driverless cars will save people time and energy mainly on the fact that these cars will communicate with each other. By allowing the cars to communicate with each other they can now go faster speeds tailgating each other and never crashing, unlike humans which most of the accidents are, tailgating, because they were driving too fast and too close to be able to stop in time. Driverless cars will never get stuck in traffic jam like how people…
