Technology is something that many people have accepted as a necessary part of life. When asked, many teenagers do not think they could get by without their phone. Recently, many have advocated getting technology into grade-school classrooms so that students can use iPads as a device through which to learn. The one-to-one table initiative was a movement to get one iPad per student in schools for bettering education.
In the article, “I gave my students iPads - then wished I could take them back” Launa Hall discusses with regret how her classroom switched to one-to-one tablet initiative which placed an iPad into each student’s hands. She talked about how the students missed out on communicating with peers as well as other fun activities such as building legos during a rainy day. If these students do not grow up with proper communication skills then this will greatly impact society with a large population who would rather keep to themselves rather than talking to others. The effects are much more widespread than just face-to-face communication. The article raises an interesting concern pertaining to attention spans, “It can be hard for kids to sustain their attention in a small group discussion when their own personal portal beckons from the back of the room” (Launa).
