Workers seemed to have an awful life. As it explains in the novella, “Most of men who work on the ranch are the loneliness men in the world. They would have nothing in the future to think about”. (61). Shown through the characters of Lennie and George and also other workers throughout the book, it can be shown that people who work on a ranch have to handle the fact of being lonely. Most of the characters from the book have little to no family and they have to support themselves without the help of anyone. Steinbeck’s writing also reflects the simplicity of each character. All of them are working people they can eat, talk and live very easily in a barn. The novella Of Mice and Men portrays the life of a migrant workers during 1930’s during difficult times during the Great Depression. In Steinbeck’s novel Lennie and George are symbolized by two people who have hopes of one day achieving their greatest dream and owning a ranch of their own. Throughout the book they talk about the reality of their dream and how they want to have the freedom and power to do whatever they want but as the book goes further in depth you can tell that the dream will soon be dead and this happens when Lennie kills curley’s wife and then runs away.
