Space exploration is one the most compelling problems that we face today and you might think that it is overrated and does not need that much attention, but you are wrong. Some people think that space exploration is a waste of money and resources, the time wasted in such field should have been used in other important stuff such as ending poverty, solving the worldwide economic crisis and trying to end global warming. While other people support space exploration and may sacrifice their lives just to feed their need for science, they think there is not any boundary for exploring space, it has provided us with many amazing discoveries and solved a huge amount of mysteries that helped us in our daily lives by saving time, creating …show more content…
shortcuts for complex issues and saved both money and lives of money people. So is space exploring really a waste of money and should be eliminated? Or is it an important issue and without it we would suffer? , In this essay we will find out.
Scientists believe that scientific knowledge is much more valuable than anything and cannot be measured by any cost.
How the world came into being and how we were created, this kind of knowledge is absolutely priceless. Many space exploration discoveries changed our lives, such as solar energy which is now considered a main source of non-pollutant energy, telecommunications which made it possible to reach for our beloveds on the other side of the globe instantly, artificial limbs which came to existence “as a result of the advancement of artificial muscle systems for use in NASA space robotic and extravehicular activities” (List25.com, 25) helped many people deal with their disabilities and many much more discoveries and like what Benjamin Franklin said “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest” this proves that scientific knowledge is …show more content…
priceless.
The cost for space exploration is not really that high compared to other mega projects. As we all know space exploration is expensive, but when we compare it with other projects and investments the price is neglected. For example “There has been space vehicles built in the private sector for as little as $25m” (debatewise.org) while a resort located in Singapore called Marina Bay Sands was built for about 8 billion dollars (Wikipedia.org), when we compare these two projects the resort is about 320 times as expensive as the space vehicles !. So it is clear that space exploration is not the only thing that costs a lot of money.
It’s in man's nature to discover, explore and to reach for stuff that are totally mysterious. When God created us he gave us a gift that made us superior organisms which is our brain, inside it is a need to discover. Without this need Kangaroos would only exist in Australia, Black people would only live in Africa, the Americas would remain undiscovered until today and lots of other fascinating stuff wouldn’t exist if we just closed our doors, decided not to discover and explore!
Space was built for us as a gift from God so we can unlock the mysteries and discover the unknown as he clearly states “And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought” (Holy Quran: Al-Jathiyah 499) this shows that we were ordered to discover space. Another reason that God has created space is to provide possible new homes for us because Earth will not be habitable for long for many reasons like our sun, it is dying and eventually will blow up, nearby asteroids which constantly interfere with earths’ orbit will collide with us one time and many other catastrophic reasons. It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster on planet Earth in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet. Let's hope we can avoid dropping the basket until we have spread the load (Hawking, Stephen: “Abandon Earth or Face Extinction.” Bigthink.com)
That’s why we need to make sure that our race doesn’t extinct and to colonize in every available space.
People who are against space exploration think that we need to finish our priorities first. Today we face dozens of serious problems like the World Wide Economic Crisis; today’s’ crisis is the worst since the 1930s: banks are failing, credit crunches, massive layoffs (Yaleglobal.yale.edu). Another problem is the Global Warming which might end up life as we know it due to the extreme weather and sea-level rise! The most serious problem that we face today is Poverty, all the money and investments in the world should be dedicated to solving this problem because when we reach a point where in India 27% of India’s rural population live in poverty. (ruralpovertyportal.org). Where in Egypt twenty six percent of Egypt’s population lives in poverty.(egyptianstreets.com) These percentages are insane, if we continue on this rate we wouldn’t deserve to be called Humans.
Our planet today is not yet fully discovered and we explore space?! According to the NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research 95% of oceans remain undiscovered (oceanservice.noaa.org). National geographic clearly states that 87% of species remains undiscovered until today (news.nationalgeographic.com). According to some uncertain theories 80% of earths’ geography remains a mystery. So after exploring our own planet we should explore space.
NASA is very hazardous concerning a lot of serious matters.
Many tests and experiments that NASA has tried over the years ended up in disasters, three of these disasters unfortunately included casualties. First of all, The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster which occurred on February 1st, 2002 when it was returning to Earth killing all 7 crew members (space.com). Second, The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster which occurred on January 28th, 1986 when the space vehicle broke 73 seconds after departure, burning 2 million liters of fuel and exploding in front of spectators all around the world killing all crew members (spacesafetymagazine.com). Last disaster is the Soyuz-U Rocket Explosion Disaster which occurred on October 25th, 2002 which exploded 29 seconds after launch, killing a scientist and injuring 8 others due to a system failure (newscientist.com). All this lost money could have been used to improve many peoples’
lives.
To conclude this essay, it must be said that space exploration is NOT a waste of money at all because without exploring we wouldn’t be humans, we wouldn’t survive we would be DOOMED. So we should not say that it is waste of money, to be more positive and look to the bright side because in the end as Felix Baumgartner stated “Sometimes you have to get up really high to understand how small you really are”.
