Pilot episodes are notorious for not being the best. Add the source material's extensive background information and the immense pressure from the fans of the series to that pile and you could have a recipe for disaster. However, the show did a decent job of handling everything and produced a not-too-shabby pilot.
Let's begin with what the show did well. First off, the main cast did a great job this first episode. Katherine McNamara (Clary Fray), the lead of the show, gave a much better performance than what was shown in the trailers and first looks of the show. Not everything was perfect, but for starting out, she is full of potential and really captures her character's essence. However, Alberto Rosende (Simon Lewis) stole the show in every scene he was in. His line delivery was spot-on and the lines he was given were perhaps some of the best in the episode. You can tell that the writers and Alberto put a lot of care and effort into his character. And, with him, some other noteworthy performances go to Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood and Alan Van Sprang as Valentine Morgenstern. …show more content…
The journey Clary goes through in the pilot quite closely reflects the journey she goes through in the first few chapters of "City of Bones". Also, while there are a few changes, there are also aspects of the story that fans of the book will appreciate, such as Simon's weird band
