Argumentative Essay: The Daily Show
“The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” has recently come under fire over a tweet about the Supreme Court’s ruling on Texas’ abortion restrictions which was deemed as offensive.
On Monday, “Daily Show” tried to celebrate the SCOTUS ruling striking down a Texas law which restricts abortion clinic by putting up a Twitter post about the issue. However, netizens quickly slammed the show over the tweet, which many people saw as a joke that has gone too far, USA Today reports.
“Celebrate the #SCOTUS ruling! Go knock someone up in Texas!” The “Daily Show” said in the now controversial Twitter post.
Netizens did not hesitate to air out their opinion regarding the celebratory tweet. A female user said a guy was probably running the “Daily Show” Twitter account.

Date of Decision: June 28th, 1996. The portion of the regulations, which permitted cable operators to restrict offensive or indecent programming on leased cable channels, was constitutional. However, those portions of the regulations, which allowed the operator, tore strict such programming on public access channels, and which required cable operators to put patently offensive programming on separate channels, which cannot be received unless a viewer requests to have the channel "unblocked," were unconstitutional restrictions on free speech.…

The Weekend Update gave the audience a well-earned break from the excess amount of Trump we had seen for the night. The mock news show attacked both political parties by calling out Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, President Obama, and of course Donald Trump. The Update also welcomed a guest speaker, “Drunk Uncle” the self-proclaimed number one Trump fan. The character was spot on in his portrayal of Trump supporters: drunken, insane, and full of hatred.…

Perhaps it is impossible to deal with online harassment; prosecutors are not jumping out of their seats to try people from across the world for saying mean things. However, relying on the moderation of content by content providers has failed, and the human costs of such harassment are not mitigated by the medium from which it originated. That Jerry Falwell was said to have had committed incest in a Hustler Magazine parody rather than in Time was an important factor in why he lost Hustler vs. Falwell. Even though Jerry Falwell was gravely offended by Hustler’s assertion and he had, by all intents and purposes, a legitimate grievance to say that the Hustler ad caused him emotional distress, he lost the case because Hustler Magazine was not a serious news publication in which a reasonable person could assume that the ad was factual. If one goes onto a pro-anorexia website and sees advice, photos, and stories on how to acquire and maintain an eating disorder, could we say that that content is not intentionally inflicting emotional harm if it is a parody of legitimate medical websites? The term ‘intentional infliction of emotional distress’ may as well be rendered moot if the standard for meeting it is so astronomically high that no action beyond pure character assassination in what is considered to be a legitimate news outlet by a writer who claims to be serious and not a satirist and featuring a figure who is considered to be a private individual shall meet the…

It is very likely that students, like me, during odd hours after homework or class will go to their rooms and flip through television channels to watch something in order to not be bored. The Daily Show may or may not be one of my television series of choice. Whether you choose to watch the series for laughs, entertainment or news value, I feel like there is a certain audience that it targets that knows the news facts and doesn’t solely depend on Jon Stewart for international news. The comedic value that shows such as The Daily Show offers, does not interfere with real life news facts unlike Jason Zinser states in his essay, "The Good, The Bad, and The Daily Show", suggests.…

"I think we should do exactly what we have been doing for ten years. Every time you hit the button, you are saying the FCC is right. Every time we hit the button, we are saying we're doing something wrong. And I suggest to you there is nothing wrong about this show. We are in a war. It's a cultural war. The Republican Party used to stand for -- and I supported this -- less government in your life, less intervention in your life, less control of your bedroom and your private life. They no longer stand for that. [Attorney General John] Ashcroft is out of control. He's looking to invade your bedroom. He doesn't want you watching porno. He doesn't want you looking at statues. He doesn't want you watching HBO. He doesn't want you to hear this show. It's absolutely out of…

It is very important to know how far the rule of free speech can go and some of its acceptions. Many things in the world can take offense to a group of people or just one thing can offend one person. There will always be something that another person disagrees with but every person has the right to free speech. The problem within the Supreme Court is the point at which something might offend one person or a group of people, but others are acceptable to it. Bok claims that the acts are “insensitive and unwise,” but are permitted and lawfully legal (Barnet and Bedau 66).…

The inapt production of offensive jokes is unique to crimes such as rape and sexual assault because it does not yield a sense of alleviation; it mocks the psychological damage that victims suffer from. Contrary to offensive jokes, humor provides a means for society to soften serious situations and direct attention towards issues through means that allows the audience to react with laughter. Comedy communicates ideas that are not offensive, but rather entertaining because there is no immediate threat. On that late night, the pizza box fire was transformed from a dangerous situation into a hilarious story that is still brought up to this day. The circumstances intensified the situation and in effect made the situation more enthralling. Humor…

In a Friday tweet storm in response to the outage incident, Trump gave a "Covfefe"-esque response as to the worker's motivation. If a candidate makes a bad joke or a false statement, it can cause them to lose support in a presidential election. In Robert E. Denton, Jr.’s “The 2012 Presidential Campaign,” he discusses candidates’ memes and videos on social media. Denton elaborated on how a candidate’s actions can “go viral,” in minutes and “leave the campaign little control over the message.” For example, Big Bird memes were the highlight of the second 2012 presidential debate when Romney stated: "he would consider cutting federal funding to PBS though he liked Big Bird." After his statement, The Washington Post reported that Twitter users posted 17,000 tweets per minute mentioning Romney’s Big Bird remarks. After the debate, the public viewed Romney as ignorant for not understanding the value of education on public broadcasting…

It is not unusual for these networks to tailor their story's to match their outlets agendas. The mass media has an extremely diverse collection of viewers, both of which tend to segregate themselves based off the politics and underlying agendas embedded within the reporting. One of these agendas that have become a part of pop culture in recent years involves the LGBTQ community. What sparked a large part of this was the Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner, through the use of the ‘T’ or Transgender. This story came out right after Bruce had killed a woman, while texting and driving. In the event of this, to make the public completely forget he decided to use the LGBTQ community to spark controversy, and changing the mass media’s content. This brought up the debate over heterosexism between news outlets like Fox and CNN, alongside with social media websites. A lot of people struggled with this type of change PC culture was bringing about the nation and its government. Liberal and Hollywood media faught against heterosexism, while more conservative ones embraced its…
