What is CrossFit? CrossFit is a revolutionary workout program whose mantra is “be a jack of all trades and a master of none”. The goal is not to train for any specific skills or movements but achieve a high level of fitness and general physical preparedness. The workouts can include gymnastics; weightlifting and high-intensity interval (HIIT) work in various forms. CrossFit was developed by Greg Glassman in 1996 and formally established as a company in 2000. Glassman was a former gymnast who was working as a personal trainer and becoming frustrated by the limitations of a traditional gym. Since the first affiliate was incorporated in Seattle in 2000 CrossFit has doubled in size every year growing to 10,000 affiliates (also called Boxes) world wide as of July 2014(Sternkopf, 2014). As a workout or a sport. If you consider it a workout then you should take it slow and concentrate on your form and not the amount of weight you can lift or how fast you can get done. Most beginners let their ego take over and completely over do it. I am a prime example of someone whose ego took over. I injured myself while doing CrossFit not because it was dangerous but because I was letting my brain write checks that my body couldn’t cash. This sort of thinking happens in all types of workout routines as well as sports training and this escalates the possibility of injury. For me, it ended up being a ruptured Achilles tendon. It would not have mattered what type out routine I chose or where I worked out. It was a freak accident that would have occurred doing any other type of moderate
