Good morning ladies, here we are in the year 1904, surrounded by multiple ideas of who should do what and what one shouldn’t do. Thing is that's just a matter of ideology, as I stand here and instruct you all in behalf of us (the Negro women) I don’t understand, nor settle to the idea of having limited amount of resources each of us “can” do. For example the jobs we are allowed to conduct and how only very little of us can actually become a professional. Perhaps not being able to take self decisions on what we may desire, has always been a huge controversial topic in the other races. Choosing to vote or choosing not to, has always been prohibited to us. With maybe several exceptions. When actually the constitution, has two magnificent amendments that favor the rights to us the African American women. We should know which rights we can have, not mattering our skin color nor our gender. We as African Americans women know that our lives …show more content…
have always been filled with struggles, from attending school, to obtaining a job and more than anything getting the right physical and psychological treatment. It has always been more severe on us women than on what it has been for the men in our race. Life for us African American women has never been fair, but who said life had to be fair right? Well know allow me to explain and illustrate to you what I think we should all work on. Every single one of us has purposes and our skin color shouldn’t stop us from achieving them , within these purposes we can include how we will better ourselves, how we will make the “right choices”, and most importantly learn how to interact with other races. Races who might of not been the most generous with us but we still have to learn how to interact with the people who will be in our surroundings, due to the fact that we will all eventually have to live amongst each other and may end up working in the same place as one another.
As african american women that we are, we have always live in fear and under many conditions of what we are to do and the rights we have to follow. Reality is we are not forced to do anything anyone tells us to do. It's the complete opposite we are to make our voices heard. Yet it’s ironic coming from me your educator right, me being a woman who has always been told what to do. Well this had only happened because according to other people(other races) there are right things to be done form us and there are things that are right to be done from us. Here is what I have to tell you, each and everyone of you including myself are here to do magnificent things not to taking under consideration what others have to say. Perhaps yes we have heard different opinions or maybe even been judged because of the societal background we come from, or simply because we are women. Hear me now, no matter where or how we stand today we will always continue to try on improving and bettering our rights. Proving everyone who says we are only to do several things because we would only be good at those several things.
I have heard multiple opinions on what our life should look like. Allow me to instructor you all into what the author of “Atlanta Exposition Address” Booker T. Washington had to say about all of us, “... will awaken a new era of industrial progress. Ignorant and inexperienced, it is not strange that in the first years of our new life we began at the top instead of at the bottom.” Can you all imagine if this was actually true and we had started at the top? One we would be completely grateful and not here in fear because we are not able to take self decisions on what we would like to. In conjunction maybe for the other races it has been commonly to start at the top but for us African American Women it has never been that way but the complete opposite. Not only has it been of a great struggle to obtain our rights but also for all of the African Americans. Yes, for us women it's been at a more difficult point and maybe be even exceeded but everything will change.
We will change in a sense that will only help us better ourselves. Us women will learn to value ourselves instead of being told what one's value is. Coming to the understanding of what we as women are worth makes everything simpler. We get the understanding of what we believe we had been doing this entire time, think it was “the right” thing to do. Reality and thankfully all of us women will realize that was actually not the “right” thing to do.
There are still several things I don't understand nor settle to the exact idea, like being limited on the amount of resources there are.
Hear me when I say this, many of us are in a position we might not feel comfortable with but we will be out of there, there will be a better tomorrow for each and everyone of us. Even though everything might seem like it's against us things are not to stay the same. What we have to do is show everyone what we are truly capable of doing, that the place where they have us standing at and the underestimation there is has to come to an end. If all of us work together upon the whole process we can go beyond it. Keep in mind ladies that we are not only willing to take this big step for a tremendous change, to demonstrate to others but to ourselves and to set a better example than what the African American women have been “setting” though the course of time. We all have to make this happen fighting for our rights will not be easy but it sure will not be impossible
either.
The jobs that are offered for us women are not worthy for any person. Jobs that are brutal and cruel such as staying at home being a “house wife” and eventually being sold to become a slave. On an investigation that was conducted it is perceived to us that about half of African American people go out for domestic jobs and/or trade. Keep in mind that yes indeed not all of these people are African American Women but a huge part of them are. What matters is that the jobs being offered are not the best. Looking back to it, what do we see? For the profession job industries and occupations less than 3% are able to obtain a profession. Again ladies not all of these regarde only the feminine gender, but look at it this way less than 3% meaning only a 1.5% of women may and may not be women. As of me yes, I am extremely fortunate to have a profession that favors me and this is exactly what I want for each and every one of you. Jobs should be a “where to choose from” for everybody. No matter the race we come from. We have to fight for the job opportunities we desire.
Taking self decisions is also involved within everything I have mentioned to you all. Not having rights means we have no self making decisions. Under this falls the decision making of voting or not. Charles W. Chesnutt states “Whether a class of citizen should vote, even if not always wisely- what class does? May be determined by considering their condition when they are without the right to vote.” Us African Women have the right to do anything we may possibly desire, whether it might be the best or not the best, the wiser or maybe not we all have the right to make self decisions. No one should prohibit us that. Unfortunately many laws do not favor us for it. As I set you the example of voting it doesn’t matter if you are making the best choice or electing the right person for whatever it might be, you have rights just as anybody else would. If we don’t have rights we will obtain our rights.
There has been times where exceptions are made, and you might feel discouraged by so but this is my reason as to why I am instructing you. The times there has been exceptions the persons who are allowed to vote are African American, but in order to do so they must have a professional background. This is so that they can proof we have “wise knowledge” and that we will do the “right” choice. Then again there is no right or wrong choice, because just as they choose what's best so will we.
Let me break it down for us a little better, the constitution has two amendments that favor us. Not only African American Women but all African American race. These two amendments are the 14 and 15 amendment. These amendments do not guarantee much but still in favor the African American race to better illustration of right. Now too all you ladies just as we have continued to fight for our rights, we shall continue doing so. One day the day will come to where all of us will be equal and all of us will be subject under the same rights. Every race will learn how to get along amongst each other. Maybe one day even contribute with one another.
We will make a change if we continue to unite. Ladies this not being able to take self decisions, and being told what is right from wrong will soon end. Have faith in humanity and more than anything always work yourself up the best way. We will obtain better opportunities, jobs will be offered for us “African American Women”. Now don’t forget everything I have came across with you about. We will earn our right, we will have rights !
