When I started this class, I believe I had strong writing skills, and now I believe these skills have strengthened, making me a more conscious writer. Before this class, I have not focused on aspects such as sentence length and specific words that I am using. Instead, I simply wrote and worked on proper grammar. My essay writing skills have definitely improved throughout this class simply due to the fact that I spend more time writing my essays. Now that I have mastered more skills, I can utilize them in every essay from here on out. While I know that I still have room to improve, I am pleased by my progress and I feel more confident about my writing. I have always enjoyed writing essays, but this class has helped me more fully understand the complexities of writing an essay. Previously, most essays I have written have been standard for English classes, and…

I now feel, after being a student of this class, being successful in business or school requires the ability to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a logical format. Without these skills it is impossible to communicate thoughts and emotions grammatically. Reflecting on the past three months, I notice that our English 1A class has learned skills necessary to develop personal, informative, and persuasive essays. These are essential points needed to become successful in today's society. In previous English courses that I have participated in, I never realized that essay-writing skills were so important. Because of this class, my attitude toward writing has matured into an understanding of what it takes to be a good writer. Without the knowledge of why writing skills were important, I was concerned about "just getting by". Now, I enjoy the challenge of composing an interesting and thought provoking essay. I find myself developing an essay with my reader in mind, and thinking what might stimulate them to read my work. This class has developed my senses and stimulated my curiosity in the literary world and I feel I have made significant progress in my writing process. The most important of which being how, by the proper use of commas, transitions, and supportive quotes, I transform my average essay into a well composed, interesting literary work, well at least I think it’s interesting.…

What is the best solution to a more successful future? This question is in the minds of many students and parents. In my opinion, I think that attending a public school is a better solution than attending a private school. As of November 20, 2014, same –sex marriage has been legalized in 35 out of 50 U.S. states. Same-sex marriage is a hot topic which the Supreme Court is considering to legalize. Many people say a homosexual person is a sinner. The question is do homosexual people choose his or her gender? They were born that way and they are happy with their lives. Homosexual people are nothing unlike heterosexual people. They are living, they are working, and they contribute to society. Proponents state that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. On the other side, opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery downhill way that may lead to polygamous and interspecies marriages (gaymarriage.procon.org). All people in the world should understand the meaning of marriage, whether a same-sex marriage or a traditional marriage. For that reason, same-sex marriage should be considered as a legal marriage because it is an equal right for humankind and beneficial for society as well as preventing youth suicide.…

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…

Writing is always difficult and takes a long time, this is my first impression about any writing class. Not only because of its techniques, but also the language was a big obstacle. I don’t see myself as a good writer and writing for me is just a required task I have to get it done. I moved to the United States three years ago. I have taken English as a first foreign language in my Egyptian school beside Arabic --my native language--. When I moved here and started school, I placed in an ESL class for a quarter and then moved to regular English classes after that. When I start the writing courses here at UCI, I wasn’t happy about my placement. After, I was taking a regular English classes in high school, I placed in AC English 20C/D. I wished that I had gotten placed in a more advanced writing course. But after finishing these academic courses, I can admit that my enrollment was not a waste and it was the right choice. During these courses, I have improved in many different areas. Doing the essay in three drafts required me to go over and reconsider my essay…

Coming into this class I was aware that my writing abilities were not the most resilient. I attempted this class my senior year in high school, but due to lack of motivation and laziness I received a D for the class. Seeing that I needed to retake a class that was not particularly my most successful topic pushed me to achieve success. I established a goal, to pass the class with at least a B, and I am only one more paper away from doing that. I’m writing this letter to tell you how my writing has changed for the better over the semester, and the obstacles that I had to overcome.…

The people of America are categorized into different classes: the upper class, middle class, lower class, and the (sometimes mentioned) working class. In Gregory Mantsios’s article “Class In America – 2009,” he explains that there are distinct differences between each class through every day life-styles as one example, explaining how a person lives determines not only their social statues, but also their economic status. Diana Kendall’s article on “Framing Class” also explains how the lives of people in different class standings are portrayed in media, describing how the media shows how living life as a part of the upper class is better than how the average person in a lower class lives. Equal opportunities are available to the people in America despite class categories, as it depends on the individual and how they choose to pursue each given opportunity through things such as a job and living conditions, education, and chances to survive.…
