The Importance of Art in Education
The importance of art in education is an issue that has been debated over many times by the likes of scholars, artists and scientists. There have been many studies on whether art is beneficial for education, but we must look further than whether it enhances a students I.Q., but rather how it can help improve a student’s cognitive ability and critical thinking. The role of the visual arts in education on the students not only increases their creativity but also their overall general understanding of things.
The misunderstanding of the majority of people in society, is that art is generally reserved for those only who have talent. This is a common misconception. Talent in art is not something that one is born with but talent comes from hard work and rigorous practice. No doubt there are artists who are famous for being prodigy’s of the arts from a young age, but even the greatest artists of all time have spent years perfecting their skill. Personally, I have not always been particularly skilled in the arts, but with practice my artistic skills have developed considerably over the past few years. With practice almost anyone can develop artistic skills and this is why applying arts in education is important for students to understand their capabilities and to develop a better understanding of visual art forms.
Art also allows students to develop a way to express their thoughts or feelings through artistic expression. This helps with a student’s mental well-being and their understanding of how to express their individuality and imagination. Albert Einstein said that “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”. Imagination is the key to develop the curiosity to learn, this curiosity is what inspires the students to learn.
