Olaf’s self – esteem was decimated by a plague of insecurities upon meeting Jim. “He felt as though this man had come here expressly to remind him how puny, how tiny, and how weak, and how white he was” (Page 209). Olaf indignantly perceives that he is being regarded as inferior when his help has been refused and Jim insists he can carry his own bag. “He thinks I’m nothing…” (Page 210).
“His chest bulged like a barrel; his rocklike and humped shoulders hinted of mountain ridges…” (Page 209). According to the illustration given of Jim’s hunk physique the reader might assume Olaf is a homosexual. Further along there is even an indication that Olaf may enjoy watching the movements of the ebony giant. “Nudging the giant on the bed to make him move as he did so…” (Page 211).
Jim was a man who knew he could and would get what he wanted because he was menacing in size, and he used his appearance to intimidate Olaf. In one of Olaf’s and Jim’s encounter Jim was characterized with coercion. On departure, the night Jim leaves the hotel he puts his hands around Olaf’s neck without explaining his purpose. “With a slow and deliberate movement of his gorilla like arms, he lifted his mammoth hands to Olaf’s throat” (Page 213).
Jim was utterly aware in the course of Olaf’s incurable racial prejudice. This explains Jim’s ambiguous character throughout the story. Some of Jim’s actions lead to question marks in the readers mind. He hands over a large sum of money for Olaf to ensure. Jim says,” ‘keep this for me, will you?’ the black giant commanded ‘cause I’m gonna get drunk tonight and I don’t wanna lose it’ ” (Page 210).
