Compatibilism is the idea that free will and determinism can coexist. The choices that we are faced with today are the causes of choices we have made in the past. Compatibilist believe that freedom is the ability for a person to be able to make their own choices and not be restricted. One of the major objections to compatibilism is that many other philosophers believe they have the wrong idea over what freedom is as well as free will. Hard determinism is a view on free will which states that determinism is true and that it is incompatible with free will. Because of this, it states that we do not have a free will at all. This can be a major objection because it spells out that we don’t have any free will and no control over our actions. Many people can see this as scary to think about and therefore reject it. Everyone likes to think that we have choices but when you truly sit down and think about it, do you? All our actions are determined by external factors.
