not knowing that your mom is a manger there. While shopping at Meijer it can be very frustrating especially at the one in Grandville because the store is predominately white, and because your skin is darker you get followed around the store and watched. Another popular institutional racism that was published in the papers is a popular store called Abercrombie and Fitch admited to “not wanting larger people shopping at his store, he wants thin and beautiful poeple”. This institutional racism was one of the most liked about and many people boycott Abercrombie.
When 9/11 happened in 2011, there was more institutional racism going on than years previously.
Many muslims and people who look Muslim were shown a great amount of judgment from the USA, for something that many of them had nothing to do with Osama Benladin. Because of the amount of institutional racism that was occuring to Muslims that were in school many parents offered to change the first name of their sons name because it was “Osama”. After 9/11 Muslims where looked at as enemies and not people for a crime that they had not comitted. Many store owners where harrased by shoppers that stoped by their stores before 9/11 and now are being called terroist because of their faith. Although this is an very obvious Institutional racism we dont think about the situation enough and relaize that muslims all around the US had a rough time by other Americans because of their appearance and or
faith.
In Native Son, a story about a 19 year African American , that kills a 19 year old white girl, named Mary, and gets the death penalty but as he is in prision in his head awaiting his sentence he struggles with the whites thinking that he kidnapped Mary. Where as she was not found until about a week later in a furnice by a group of reporters. Because what most African Americans go through his lawyer convences him that Bigger was going through some mental problems because of his living situation. Institutional Racism can be one of the toughest to see and sometimes it is in plain sight. Institutional racism is all around the world, some places may be easier to spot than others, rather its your job or religion if you pay attention cllosely youll spot it. Take a look and see how diverse your work place is. If it not and it predomately one race although other races apply and dont get the job or are fired, you may have a case of institutional racism.
