The original key principle was that the Government would be run by the citizens of America versus an elite few who might gain individual power. However, in today’s society, the word that needs to be most heavily examined would be ‘independent”. Only a society that is self-sufficient has the capability of governing itself for the purpose of positive direction. In other words, how can a community appropriately determine what’s necessary to prosper when the community itself is not capable of adequately providing for itself. Today the federal government spends slightly over 1 trillion dollars a year on all levels of welfare, and state governments contribute another $430 billion for the same programs. That actually equals to a 41% increase since 2008. The national deficit rose 5 trillion dollars over the past four years, and is expected to rise 845 billion this year alone. However this doesn’t even consider the 100 trillion dollars of unfunded liability for Medicare and Social Security. Economist Laurence Kotlikoff estimated, “total federal indebtedness at…an astonishing $222 trillion.” So all things considered, Welfare is racking up insurmountable debt that we as a country will never be able to recover from, so it is evident that it is a limb that must be amputated in order to prosper as a nation once
