As a young child is Sunday school, I use to ask question to my Sunday school teacher. If the Bible is the word of God, why did bad things happen in the Bible if God is a good God? As a teen and staying true to my religious upbringing, I knew in my heart that the Bible was the word of God because with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). The unmistakable honesty of the scriptures is the argument that best reflects my childhood question. As stated in the article, “if the Bible were invented by men, they would have been more respectful in omitting the sins of God’s people.” Dr. Townes explained that the authors of the Bible talks about themselves as they are honest about their sins, their nations, and their exploits. The Bible tells us stories of God’s people who did sinful things but yet received the approval of God. I am a sinner and I have been rewarded and forgiven by God therefore I know that Bible is the word of God. Dr. Towns stated “God wants us to know that all men are mortal and fallible.” The honesty that these authors wrote in the Bible in my opinion gives us the opportunity to testify and allow others to know that God is a forgiving God. It is brilliantly stated in the article “when we see flaws in our heroes, it makes us accept ourselves and our failures with little more humility and perseverance.” In the future when my children ask the questions I asked in Sunday school, I can refer back to this very argument and the explanations of Dr. Towns and give them the answer.
