In book ten this question is answered and Aristotle tells us that to be able to answer the real happiness of a person is by what they are contemplating. What makes a human unique is the ability to rationalize and this makes them different from animals. What a person contemplates and finds pleasure to this is a man’s function. If man can find contemplation in the right things, at the right time, with the right object, at the best condition, and best sense than this person is experiencing what man’s function is. The pleasure that the virtues man feels is choosing to the good over anything else because that is what he likes and finds happiness. A person needs to find pleasure in what they contemplate because if the person doesn’t feel something emotional towards what they are contemplating than the person is not really contemplating anything because there is nothing productive taking out of it. Happiness is seen as an activity because a person cannot experience happiness if they are in a comma or dead.
