Armatage Eye Screening Experience: Development, And, Or Demonstrate The Competency
Describe the experience and summarize how the experience provided an opportunity to develop and/or demonstrate the competency.
a. Briefly describe the experience
My experience at Armatage eye screening was superb. I got an opportunity to interact with the children, and it was a pleasant experience to learn about how to check for signs of external eye disease and abnormalities especially in the school-age children for any eye defects that their parent might not observe early. During the screening, it was surprising to find more than three kindergarten boys who did not pass the color vision screening. Who knows, these children might have been seen by their parent, or teacher as being dull and cannot identify their colors at that age, but not knowing that there is an issue going on with their eye. At that spot, I appreciated the public health services at the community level.

Describe a part of the competency that you found most difficult to meet and how you can see yourself becoming more skilled in the part of the competency.
I didn’t find any of the competency challenging to use. It could be because of the type of community service that was provided, and the type of activity required in the process of carrying out the screening.
Describe how this activity connects to population-based public health nursing practice
a. Identify the population(s) and community that served through this experience.
• The population served through this experience was the elementary school population.
b. Identify interventions from the intervention wheel and provide examples.
• Outreach: locates populations of interest or populations at risk and provides information about the nature of the concern, what can be done about it, and how services can be obtained. For example, going to the elementary schools around Minneapolis/ St. Paul is a way of reaching out to that population to see if there will be any cases that need follow
