I have chosen Armstrong State University (ASU) as my institution of choice. Please let this letter inform you of my interest in applying for the Master of Adult Education and Lifelong Learning beginning summer 2017. Dr. Patricia Holt, from the Department of Secondary, Adult and Physical Education, has been very instrumental in helping me reach my …show more content…
final decision. With excitement, I look forward to working with her and other department faculty to gain the necessary skills to excel in the professions of adult education.
I earned my undergraduate degree at Valdosta State University (VSU) majoring in Workforce Education and Development with a concentration in Training and Development.
My overall grade point average (GPA) was a 2.97; however, my GPA for the last 60 hours in my major ranked a 4.0. Every semester I accomplished being named to the Dean’s List. I was also a member of several student organizations: Student Veterans of America, Future Business Leaders of America, NAACP, Mass Choir, and Xchange Ministries. As for my volunteer activities, I loved helping nontraditional students at night with learning basic computer skills, tutoring migrant workers to speak and write English and help Habitat for Humanity families beautify their new homes. As far as recognitions and awards, I have been nominated and chosen for Employee of the Semester, Outstanding Administrative Personnel and have received many “Caught You Caring” recognitions for exhibiting outstanding excellence while on the
job.
I am an employee of VSU and have been for ten years, and work at the VSU campus at Moody Air Force Base. Here we offer counseling and advice to military members and their families who wish to pursue their education. We also manage evening and weekend courses for two adult programs. This is where I learned to appreciate and understand the dilemmas of the adult learner and it is where my interest in pursuing a career in adult education began. In fall 2013, even though I was facing major obstacles, I decided to “dance in the rain” by returning to college, at a much older age being reluctant to do so because I did not think I would succeed. In fact, I was afraid I would fall flat on my face. The storms and trials came every semester, but overcome them I did with the help of faculty who understood what it took to counsel and guide adults through to program completion. This fueled my aspiration of working with adult learners even more. They were my inspiration and I valued their commitment to their students. The one message they left branded in my mind was learning is a lifelong process and we never stop learning no matter the age and if we choose to succeed we will. This is the message I want to pass along to other adult learners.
By searching through the University System of Georgia institutions I came upon your master’s degree and the curriculum caught my attention. I researched the program and determined that the coursework was a great match and it also addressed adult literacy in the curriculum, which is close to my heart. Building upon the knowledge I’ve already gained, I am confident that ASU’s master’s program will help me meet my goal.
My greatest academic goal is to complete a doctorate in the adult education. Obtaining my master’s degree is a must. After completion, I hope to find employment where I can exact transformation in the life of an adult learner. Whether that’s working in academia or in the community, I am looking forward to the experience.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to continuing my studies and pursuing my passion at Armstrong State University.
