Weekly maintenance of the M4 Carbine

1. PURPOSE: This SOP will outline the Weekly clearing, disassembling, cleaning, inspection for serviceability, lubricating and reassembling of the M4 carbine.
2. APPLICABILITY: 3rd Platoon (Outlaws), Troop, higher unit
3. REFERENCES: Lubricate order (LO); STP 21–1–SMCT; TM 9–1005–319–10; and DA Form 2404, Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES: All Troopers are responsible for the serviceability of their M4 Carbine. Squad Leaders will ensure their soldiers conduct maintenance IAW Platoon SOP.
4. PROCEDURES: a. Weapons clearance will be done with extreme care to reduce the likelihood of an accidental discharge. Clearing the weapons will consist of the following steps:
1. Pointing the weapon in a safe direction.
2. Ensuring the weapon is on safe.
3. Removing the magazine if one is present.
4. Charge and lock the bolt to the rear.
5. Visually inspecting the chamber, magazine weld and bold face
6. Charge the weapon and ride the bolt forward.
7. Re-Inspecting to ensure the weapon is on safe.
b. Disassembly of the M4 carbine will be done IAW TM 9-1005-319-10. When disassembling the weapon always consolidate small parts that can be easily lost such as:
1. Firing pin retaining pin.
2. Firing pin
3. Bolt cam pin
4. Extractor
5. Extractor pin
6. Extractor spring
7. Bolt
c. Cleaning the M4 is a process that requires time and attention to detail. Cleaning the weapon makes a difference between a weapons being able to engage and one that has a misfire. Every Soldier is provided a Cleaning kit upon arriving to the unit. Pay close attention to the interior parts of the weapon system. Consider the following
