Summary: This is a webpage created by the Findingdulcineastaff that goes over and explains what the 14th Amendment is. It tells you that the 14th Amendment granted equal freedom to all people born in the U.S., even slaves. This obviously means that it abolished slavery. They passed this amendment for reconstruction of the U.S. after the devastation of the civil war. But it did have some downsides. The 14th Amendment did limit the power of state governments. This caused things…
In the years following World War II, the United States enjoyed an unprecedented economic and political boom. Amidst this growth, many artists and intellectuals had emigrated from Europe to the United States, bringing with them their own traditions and ideas, giving rise to the the Abstract Expressionist movement. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, sought to express emotions and individual feelings, and personified this through their diverse bodies of work by exploring new ways to reinvigorate and reinvent their medium of painting. Thus embodying a distinctly ‘individual - American’* element of confidence and creativity, so much that it was sponsored by the CIA because it could be held up as proof of the…
Surrealism as an art movement officially started in 1924. In 1924 The Surrealist Manifesto written by Andre Breton was published. Many of the artistic pieces of this era are dream like. Some type of art to wonder and marvel at, not an art of reason. ("Dada," n.d.) Surrealism is thought to have been formed as a reaction to Dadaism art movement, which was a protest of the carnages of World War 1. Surrealism was more focused on the positive outcomes of change happening in the world at that time. The common themes that can be seen in many of the paintings are the dreamy imagery that has an exaggerated analysis of reality. This is thought to produce a more truthful interpretation of what the mind may have experienced through dream. Salvador Dali used a technique which was coined ‘critical paranoia’ ("Dada," n.d.) The technique is very visible in his painting “The Persistence of Memory”, it has a dreamy look to it…
Surrealism’s influence on future art movements, including Pop art, was very similar to art movements before. Breaking traditional thoughts of what art is and introducing thought provoking images to the audience. While both of these movements followed major conflicts (WW I and WW II, respectively), surrealists did not embrace, nor include, commercial products or celebrities within their pieces. If they had, Rene Magritte’s green apple might have been a Chiquita banana…
The tragedy suffered by Germans during World War one left a deep psychological scar on German society; having to adjust to the collapse of the imperial dream and having to suffer with the damaging effects of the war. (Eisner, 1973: 9) This damaged the German frame of mind which gave rise to the German expressionist movement which had established a manner of expressing political beliefs and personal visions of individual’s psychological states through the art of painting and film. German expressionism in cinema initially came through the work of painters that used abstract imagery to communicate their political viewpoints and to express visions of their inner torment.…
Surrealism is something that seems too good to be true. It is something that is defined as unreal. Surrealism can change people, and offer more opportunities to people. It also reunites conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that it joins with the world of dream and fantasy in an absolute reality. When surrealism is added in the nature of humankind, it has infinite endless amounts of meanings. Surrealism can impact one’s life through a variety of ways. For Tim O’Brien and many other people in war, war was very surreal for them. One of the most surreal moments O’Brien had during war was the death of Ted Lavender. “Right then, Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back from peeing. He lay with his mouth open. The…
In The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien tends to use surrealism to tell his war stories. What is surrealism? It is a mix between fact and fantasy, which makes it bizarre. For example in the chapter How To Tell a War Story he tells three surreal stories. O'Brien tells us how to know when someone is telling a true story and when someone is lying. One of the story is about Mitchell Sanders telling about six men going crazy. They went crazy in the forest because they been up there for days not talking, not talking. Another of the stories he used was about Rat Kiley losing his best friend Curt Lemmon. He tells us how he saw Lemmon die in a surreal way. The more surreal story he uses is what Rat Kiley did to a baby water buffalo after…
Postmodernism is best understood by defining the modernist ethos it replaced - that of the avant-garde who were active from 1860s to the 1950s. The various artists in the modern period were driven by a radical and forward thinking approach, ideas of technological positivity, and grand narratives of Western domination and progress. The arrival of Neo-Dada and Pop art in post-war America marked the beginning of a reaction against this mindset that came to be known as postmodernism. The reaction took on multiple artistic forms for the next four decades, including Conceptual art, Minimalism, Video art, Performance art, and Installation art. These movements are diverse and disparate but connected by certain characteristics: ironical and playful…

Surrealism is conventionally defined as something which is ‘Unreal’. Although this textbook definition may shed a bit of light on the word’s true meaning, I can assure you that Webster’s is only scratching the surface… Partially because the definition of surreal is subjective. Each and every human being on earth perceives life and the world around them differently. This means that essentially, the definition of surrealism, when applied to the nature of humankind, has almost infinite endless meaning. To someone, else, writing this paper may be something surreal. However this is generally not the case. For Tim O’Brien, and many, many others, the experience of war was surreal. The surreal carries a lot more weight than we give it credit for. Surrealism can reveal truths, offer new perspectives, and even change people.…
The surrealist movement began in the 1920s, and many of its artists continued to do work well into the sixties and seventies. The most famous of these surrealists was Salvador Dali. In 1967, Dali painted what was regarded as one of his last masterpieces entitled Tuna Fishing. In the same year, the song “I am the Walrus” was written by the Beatles as a response to a fan letter they recieved. At this time in American history there existed a considerable resentment towards those in governmental power. In fact, the song and painting were released mere months before the protests of 1968 began, and at the height of the Civil Rights movement. People across the United States protested the war, as well as the lack of basic…
The early 20th century is known for its systematic deflation of the traditional rules of Western art. Artists of this era overthrew long held conventions in a series of movements, all arising before 1920. For example Cubists created new styles of composition in painting as well as sculpture. Fauvists and Expressionists attacked traditional notions of pictorial representations through brushwork and bright colors. This is referred to as the style of abstraction. Abstract Expressionists attempted to reconstruct this style of art as a result of the major changes that were happening worldwide. The early 20th century was a dark time for Western civilization especially. In the time of World War I as well as World War II, many artists gave their art a deeper social significance. Most European artists in the immediate postwar period used their art to come to terms in some ways with what they had experienced. There were two primary ways that artists went about their art during this time; some enjoyed the aspect of figural styles while others proposed abstract art (Stokstad 1128).…
Romanticism, commonly known as American romanticism, is writing in which feelings and intuition are valued over reason. It had a great influence over literature, music, and painting in the early eighteenth and well through the nineteenth centuries. It was commonly thought of as a trip into our imagination and could be written as stories, music, and paintings, but it was mainly found in poetry. In this essay, I will discuss the romantic qualities of “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant, and “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allen Poe.…
In Europe their was years of the government trying to control art and setting what was to be considered art and not so European artist were always trying to go against the traditional. In America though a national academy came much later and after Europeans started rebelling against their own traditional views.
