Arnold Spirit Junior – is a main character of the story of Sherman Alexie The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The character, which the author introduces us to, is most probably built up on his true experiences of growing up on the Spokane Indian reservation in Wellpinit. Junior is a fourteen- year old teenager, who is a naturally born artist, a talented, hysterically funny and open- minded, smart, brave young man, yet super unsecured. Having been born with numerous medical problems; he’s been a hydrocephalic with a stutter and a lisp. These make his life hard. He actively uses his talent to express himself and how he sees the world and people. Not only does he often questions life in his cartoons, but also by drawing something contradictive, for instance, he seeks for answers and, as a result, gains great shifts in his awareness. As we know growing up can be or is a painful process. It seems that Junior’s talent helps him to grow up and go through the situations, which life brings him, with much less pain. This way along with naturally physical growth he also grows emotionally, from a boy with a bunch of medical problems and a huge inferiority complex into a confident brave young man. Junior’s journey is a great example of hope and positivity.
The talent of drawing itself is already admirable, but when it’s combined with a sense of humor, it makes it unique. The sense of humor in a person indicates intelligence. Arnold Spirit clearly possesses both. Remembering how Junior entertains his best friend Rowdy, for example.
